CELEBRATING THE TOWN'S 150th BIRTHDAY WITH COMMUNITY THEMED EVENTS!
COMMUNITY DAY | REENACTMENT OF TOWN INCORPORATION | & MORE!
Dear Neighbors,
This month marks a truly historic moment for our community—May 20th will be the official 150th birthday of the founding of the Town of Wappinger! For a century and a half, Wappinger has grown, thrived, and stood proudly as a place where families flourish, history is honored, and the future is always in focus.
As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, I invite you and your families to join us on Friday, May 17, at Brexel-Schlathaus Park for our 50th annual Community Day. This special event will feature our beloved parade, a vibrant food truck festival, and exciting live music for all ages. It’s the perfect way to honor our past and celebrate the community spirit that makes Wappinger such a special place to call home.
We remain hard at work protecting the quality of life you expect and deserve. Our team is actively updating the Comprehensive Plan and Town Code to prevent overdevelopment and preserve the character of our neighborhoods. At the same time, we’ve advanced meaningful legislation aimed at keeping smoke and vape products away from our children by staying engaged and proactive in our public health efforts.
On the ground, our progress is visible and ongoing. New playgrounds are being installed at Castle Point Park and Fleetwood Park, and 15 roads across the Town are currently being reconstructed. Our new live performance stage at Schlathaus Park is nearing completion—soon to be a hub for concerts and community events. We’re completed renovations around the Town of Wappinger War Memorial - just intime for Memorial Day, installing new interactive art panels at Spook Hill Park for children, and pushing forward with countless other projects that enhance life here in Wappinger.
I thank each of you for being part of this journey and for your continued support as we honor our history and shape a bright future for all.
See you around Town,
Joseph D. Cavaccini, Town Supervisor

HISTORICAL MARKER FOR CHELSEA GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Last week, we unveiled a historical marker for our historic Chelsea Grammar School!
|
|
The building was constructed 150 years ago in 1875 when the community was known as Low Point as the first public works project of the then new Town of Wappinger government!
Huge shout out to two Arlington High School students who obtained a grant to fund this new marker.
The building served as a one room schoolhouse that was closed around 1959 when the district merged with the Beacon City School District.
Today, half of the building is used by the Chelsea Fire District as a Commissioners office and meeting room. The other half is the Chelsea Post Office.

TOWN BOARD CONSIDERS COMPREHENSIVE PLAN UPDATES
The Town Board has retained the Laberge Group to make revisions to two sections of the 2010 Town Comprehensive Plan in regards to preventing high-density development in the Town of Wappinger. Through this process, which has included roundtable discussions and public Town Board meetings/scoping sessions, the Town Board identified several potential "loopholes" in our Town's current zoning that could allow for high density zoning increases up to 200% in some areas.
Town Supervisor Joseph D. Cavaccini said, "We have identified these concerning areas in our code that would allow for hundreds of acres of open space to be eradicated and single family zoned areas to be filled with high density housing. We are working to fix this immediately through these changes to ensure we are looking out for those who live here."
