From the Office of Town Supervisor Joseph D. Cavaccini
Dear neighbors,
As we embrace the warmth and energy of July, I am delighted to share with you the latest news and updates from our vibrant community.
Continue to mark your calendars for some exciting upcoming events that we are hosting in our Town. From the great summer concert series in both Brexel-Schlathaus Park and Mesier Park to engaging with local non-profits to raise awareness of various issues in our community, there's something for everyone to enjoy and participate in.
We continue to make significant strides in enhancing our parks and infrastructure. There are exciting recent improvements being made at Martz Field Recreation Facility and Brexel-Schlathaus Park that are long overdue and are a part of our ongoing revitalization efforts throughout the Town that underscore our commitment to creating spaces that foster community spirit and well-being.
I invite you to tune in to the recording of our July 8th Town Board meeting. During this session, we discussed the financial landscape upon my assumption of this Office and the decisive audit and control measures we have implemented since then. It's crucial for our residents to stay informed about these developments, as transparency and fiscal responsibility remain paramount in our Administration and by your Town Board.
Furthermore, we are diligently working to pass essential legislation that will codify our efforts to prevent overdevelopment in Wappinger. Preserving the character and charm of our community while promoting sustainable growth is a top priority for us, and these laws will reflect our dedication to achieving this balance.
As always, your feedback and involvement are invaluable to us. Whether through attending or watching meetings, participating in local events, or simply sharing your thoughts with us; your voice helps shape the future of Wappinger.
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. Together, we are building a stronger, more connected community that we can all be proud of.
See you around Town, Joseph D. Cavaccini, Town Supervisor

What's Happening In Wappinger
|
|
As a part of our Wappinger Parkland Improvement Act, the Town has taken significant strides in improving our parks and making decades old ideas become a reality. At Brexel-Schlathaus Park, our Buildings and Grounds Department tore down a decaying structure on the property, restriped the parking lot, as well as re-constructed the ADA accessible ramp going to the Community Center there, these efforts have eliminated significant safety concerns for visitors to the Park.
Our Highway Department has also completed in-house work at Schlathaus Park by installing nearly 400 feet of new drainage pipes, saving taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. These efforts will let the property drain properly and actually be utilized rather than allowing the 40 year old existing swamp like conditions to continue.

Supervisor Cavaccini and Town Comptroller Provide Status Update on Town Finances |
|
During the July 8, 2024, Town Board meeting, Town Comptroller Jessica Servidio provided an update into the Town's finances and what condition they were in prior to when Town Supervisor Joseph D. Cavaccini took office on January 1, 2024, to where they are now. It was evident, that although the Town is in excellent financial shape, there were a number of areas that needed improvement including audit and control. |
|
Supervisor Cavaccini went on to say, "Upon assuming office, it became clear to us that certain areas required immediate attention. Our initial assessment found the pressing need for proactive measures to address critical issues within the Town.
"We found that the Town had not previously closed out its books going back to 2022. Policies were not being followed, significant capital purchases were backed up by handwritten notes, double purchases were being made, and the Town owed vendors hundreds of thousands of dollars.
"Thanks to our collective efforts and the support of the Town Board, we have since introduced new software to eliminate silos between departments, implemented purchase orders, avoided arbitration with our unions, and began performing payroll inhouse. These efforts have not only saved taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars, but it also ensures that moving forward there will be accountability in all Town actions."
