 Town Hosts Citizens Preparedness Forum
On Thursday, October 28, 2022 more than 130 Fishkill residents attended a special Citizens Preparedness Forum, featuring an emergency preparedness presentation by County Emergency Management Director Bill Beale.
The event, organized by county officials and Town of Fishkill Deputy Supervisor and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Hal Brilliant, offered residents a chance to learn how to prepare themselves in the event of a number of possible emergency scenarios, including weather-related events that affect the Hudson Valley the most.
Town Supervisor Ozzy Albra said the turnout was fantastic, and the presentation demonstrated the importance of being prepared.
"It's easy to think that a major emergency or disaster isn't something to worry about, but it's always better to be prepared and have a plan," Supervisor Albra said. "I want to thank Emergency Management Director Bill Beale for taking the time to come to Fishkill to show our residents about the importance of being prepared for emergency situations."
At Thursday's event, Supervisor Albra told residents that the Town is already taking action to prepare for emergencies to make sure municipal water and sewer systems remain operational during power outages. Supervisor Albra said the Town has purchased four generators to provide emergency power for the Town's water districts, using federal money through ARPA. The Town has done additional work to provide backup power repairs for one of the Town's sewer pump stations, to ensure power outages don't disrupt sewer service.
For winter weather emergencies, the Town is continuing to maintain its snowplows and highway equipment, and the Town of Fishkill Police Department is ensuring officers are trained and equipped to deal with emergencies.
Councilman Carmine Istvan, who also hosted the event with Supervisor Albra and Deputy Supervisor Brilliant, said Town departments coordinate for rapid response in emergencies.
"Our Town Board, Police Department and Highway Department do a great job working together in emergencies," Carmine said. "In winter storms our Highway crews are out there making the roads passable for police and first responders, and they're always on hand to clear downed trees that are blocking roadways to make it possible for utility crews to restore power after major storms."
