Town Announces New Town Historian

The Town of Fishkill has a new Town Historian, Arnold Restivo. Arnold is a nearly 30-year resident of Fishkill, an enthusiastic history buff since high school, and is an avid ferroequinologist.

Arnold is eager to get to work and is looking for volunteers to assist at bringing his historical initiatives to life. Some planned objectives include researching and cataloguing historic documents, resources, maps and historical groups and societies, developing and hosting educational programming for the public, and planning events for the upcoming 250th Anniversary of the United States.

If you're interested in joining our history team or want more information simply send an email to socialmedia@fishkill-ny.gov!

Arnold was appointed by the Town Board at the August 17, 2022 Town Board meeting, after the Town Board accepted the resignation of previous Town Historian Paul Gromkowski. The Town Board thanked Mr. Gromkowski for his service and his excellent work on historical preservation projects in the Town, including the restoration of a number of historical markers denoting key events in Fishkill such as the Revolutionary War Battery on Route 9 and the marker commemorating the casting of Gen. George Washington's famous battle sward by cutler John Bailey.

Brockway History Remembered

Town Supervisor Ozzy Albra had the opportunity Friday to study an old photograph depicting the Brockway Brickyards during its heyday (see above). This aerial photo, estimated by former Town Historian Willa Skinner to have been taken sometime around the year 1900, depicts the old brick factory on the shore of Route 9 in the area of what is modern-day Brockway Road. The brickyards can be accessed both by river barge and the New York Central railroad lines separating the brickyards from a a cluster of buildings and a small quarry.

For a visual comparison of this old photo to modern Fishkill, Supervisor Albra asked Town social media coordinator Greg Totino to recreate the image using satellite imagery captured through Google Earth (see below). This image depicts the Brockway area now, with the brickyard long since demolished, and a number of housing developments dotting the hillside above the railroad lines.

Supervisor Albra said the two photos help paint a picture of the evolution of our Town, and encourages residents to take a moment to compare the two images.

"For the better part of three centuries, Fishkill has been growing and evolving, and there's no better way to visualize that, than by looking at photos like these," Supervisor Albra said.

Become a Volunteer Tax Preparer!

Become a Volunteer Tax Preparer!

The Community Action Partnership for Dutchess County and the Hudson Valley Creating Assets Savings and Hope Coalition (CASH) is seeking volunteers to become tax preparers for 2023!

In partnership with the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the Coalition ensures that those needing assistance filing their tax returns receive free and reliable tax preparation by certified volunteers and obtain the tax credits and refunds they are entitled to. Last filing season, 4218 returns were prepared, and $4.19 million in refunds and credits were returned to Hudson Valley residents, thanks to local volunteers.

In recent years, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers have offered tax prep events at the Town of Fishkill Recreation Center, helping hundreds of Fishkill residents file their annual returns.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tax preparer, please contact Linda Eddy from Community Action Partnership at (845) 475-7500 or by email at leddy@dutchesscap.org. If you would like more information, visit the coalition website at https://www.uwdor.org/hv-cash/partners
