The Town of Fishkill Police Department hosted the Town's first National Night Out event Tuesday at Geering Park.

Fishkill Celebrates National Night Out at Geering

The Town of Fishkill is very happy to announce that the Town's first National Night Out event was a tremendous success.

The event, organized by the Town of Fishkill Police Department, was held on Tuesday evening at Geering park as part of a national initiative to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. It provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances, to share interests and enjoy a great evening.

Police Chief Keith Dworkin said the turnout was fantastic.

"Earlier this year the Town of Fishkill Police Department recognized that National Night Out was an opportunity for us to invite our community to get together, see each other face to face and have open conversations. We know that they support us whole heartedly, we see that in our everyday encounters and feedback in our social media sites," Chief Dworkin said. "This being our first NNO event, we never expected how huge a response we would get but it confirms what we’ve known all along, they are as much here for us as we are for them."

The New York State Police attended Tuesday's event.
Town Councilmen Brian Wrye, John Forman and Carmine Istvan were among those in attendance.

Community Event

Hundreds of residents packed Geering Park for Tuesday's event, which featured a host of local food vendors and live music, as well as the participation from every law enforcement and emergency response agency serving Fishkill.

In addition to the Town of Fishkill Police Department, the Village of Fishkill Police Department, Fishkill Police Cadets, New York State Police and Dutchess County Sheriff's Office took part in Tuesday's event, as did the Rombout, Chelsea, Protection Engine, Slater Chemical and Dutchess Junction Fire Departments and the Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Local businesses attended, and there were kids activities as well including bouncy houses and face painting. Community organizations such as the Council on Addiction Prevention and Education, Be SMART For Kids, and Stray HELP were also present.

Local elected leaders came out as well, including Town Supervisor Ozzy Albra, Village Mayor Kathy Martin, Town Councilmembers Louise Daniele, John Forman, Carmine Istvan and Brian Wrye, and Town Clerk Becki Tompkins.

Supervisor Albra said the event was a great example of the engagement of the Fishkill community.

Village Mayor Kathy Martin and Village Police Commissioner Glenn Scofield Jr.

"Here in Fishkill we have a very engaged community, the residents here are connected with each other and with the businesses and organizations in the community, and they're committed to being good neighbors," Supervisor Albra said.

Supervisor Albra's sentiments were mirrored by Councilman Brian Wrye.

"Ever since this event was announced we saw a real interest from the residents to come out to the park and support our Police Department and emergency responders," Councilman Wrye said. "We're very pleased with how successful the event was. It shows the ongoing and underlying support of our Police Department in our community, and everyone's love to get together and enjoy themselves at a positive event."

Councilman Carmine Istvan credited Police Department and Parks staff for a great job organizing the event.

"Everyone over at the PD did a fantastic job setting this event up, bringing together our local law enforcement agencies, first responders, local businesses and entertainment," Councilman Istvan said. "This whole event went off without a hitch and it's the kind of family-friendly outing we can be proud of having here in Fishkill in our beautiful park spaces, and our parks team did a great helping with setup and cleanup as well."

Councilman Istvan said this year's event laid a great foundation for the future.

"I think we're all very eager to build on the successes of this year and make next year's event even better," Councilman Istvan said.

Councilmember Louise Daniele agreed, adding her thanks to Recreation Director Jay Maietta, Lauren McMenamin, Maryann vonEgypt and the Recreation team for their assistance in helping organize and set up the event.

The TARA Spay/Neuter Clinic will be held on August 18.

Spay/Neuter Vouchers Available at Town Hall

The Town Board is proud to support a low-cost spay/neuter and vaccine clinic organized by Stray HELP and performed by the TARA Mobile Clinic. The clinic is held at the Trinity Episcopal Church Parish House at 5 Elm Street in the Village of Fishkill. The next clinic session will be on Thursday, August 18, 2022.

Fishkill residents can purchase a voucher for their cat's spay or neuter service for $25 at the Town Clerk's Office in Town Hall (see photo above). This voucher includes a spay/neuter, a rabies vaccine, nail trimming and ear cleaning for your feline friend, with other services available at an additional cost.

Councilmember Daniele said she's encouraged to know residents are taking advantage of the voucher program approved by the Town Board earlier this year.

"I'm happy to see residents have taken advantage of this program and I'm glad the Town Board was able to work with Ann Lagoy and Stray HELP to create this opportunity for residents," Councilmember Daniele said. "I hope this initiative will last long into the future as a resource for residents to look after their pets, especially during these challenging economic times."

Appointments for the spay/neuter clinic are required, and residents can book their appointment by visiting the Stray HELP website at the link below.

Bird's-Eye View: Chief Nimham Statue Dedication

The Town dedicated the statue on June 11

The Town's dedication ceremony to the statue of Chief Daniel Nimham located at the Arrowhead intersection of Routes 52 and 82 on June 11 was a tremendous success. Now, for the first time, residents can get a bird's-eye view of the ceremony as it unfolded.

These never-before seen images, captured by drone camera, show the crowd gathered at the Arrowhead as the Town held a ceremony for Fishkill's greatest native son. Supervisor Albra thanks Matthew McDowell for providing these exceptional images documenting a moment in Fishkill history.
