FISHKILL SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR COMMUNITY POLICING ADVISORY COMMITTEE AS PART OF THE TOWN OF FISHKILL POLICE REFORM PROCESS
The Fishkill Town Board voted Wednesday to establish a Community Policing Advisory Committee as part of New York State police reform passed by the New York State Legislature and the Governor. This process should be completed by each municipality by April 1, 2021. This also coincides with the President’s orders, and comes after months of collaborations with Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro, Sheriff Butch Anderson, and local municipal leaders including Supervisor Ozzy Albra.
The Committee, established by Town Board resolution, will be spearheaded by Councilwomen Louise Daniele and Kenya Gadsden, and comprise a cross-section of volunteers from the Town of Fishkill.
While discussing establishing the committee, Supervisor Albra noted that the Town is required to develop a plan for police practices which includes feedback from members of the community.
“The Executive Order requires local police agencies and stakeholders in the community to develop a plan,” Albra said. “Our police department is already working on these requirements, but community participation is a key part of this process.”
Albra encouraged Fishkill residents interested in taking part in the committee to volunteer.
“If anyone out there wants to be involved, please let us know,” he said.
Interested residents can volunteer for the committee by emailing Supervisor Albra at supervisor@fishkill-ny.gov or calling his office at Town Hall at (845) 831-7800 ext 3309, by no later than Tuesday, January 19, 2021. This commitment should comprise at most four meetings, and will involve reviewing requirements from the President, Governor and County, and contributing thoughts and ideas to ensure public opinion is incorporated into the police action plan.
