Changes to certain estate tax forms

To make it easier to use New York State estate tax forms, the Tax Department:

  • standardized the fields where we collect information about the attorney and the executor—similar fields are now located in the same location on each of the forms listed below
  • redesigned the forms as fill-in forms—you can now type directly into these forms and avoid processing errors from illegible handwriting

We updated the following forms:

  • Form ET-30, Application for Release(s) of Estate Tax Lien - For an estate of an individual whose date of death is on or after January 1, 2011 (revised 1/24)
  • Form ET-85, New York State Estate Tax Certification - For an estate of an individual whose date of death is on or after January 1, 2019 (revised 2/24)
  • Form ET-130, Tentative Payment of Estate Tax - For an estate of an individual who died on or after January 1, 2019 (revised 3/24)
  • Form ET-133, Application for Extension of Time To File and/or Pay Estate Tax - For an estate of an individual who died on or after January 1, 2019 (revised 3/24)
  • Form ET-706, New York State Estate Tax Return - For an estate of an individual who died on or after January 1, 2019 (revised 3/24)

Next steps and recommendations

  1. Update any bookmarks or favorites on your desktop or on your business’s website to link to the updated forms.
  2. If you stockpiled any of the forms listed above, please destroy them. We can still process an expired version of the form, but it may cause a delay.
  3. Next time you file one of these forms, use the fill-in form, don’t handwrite your entries.
  4. Tell us about your experience using our Taxpayer Experience survey.
  5. Subscribe to our estate tax email topic to receive tax news and updates.
