Free filing resources
Using filing resources from the Tax Department can make completing and submitting your return on time fast, secure, and even free, if you qualify.
You may qualify to use Free File software if, for 2022:
- your federal adjusted gross income (AGI) is $41,000 or less, regardless of your age;
- your federal AGI is $60,000 or less and you are 57 years old or younger; or
- your federal AGI is $73,000 or less and you served as Active Duty Military (including Reservists and National Guard).

Request electronic communications
Communicate with the Tax Department using Online Services. It's fast and secure!
With an Online Services account, you can:
- confirm that we received your return, and
- sign up to receive letters or notices about your return—including your refund issue date—electronically.

Gather your information and documentation
If you received unemployment compensation, request your Form 1099-G from the Department of Labor. Remember to include the full amount on your New York State personal income tax return.
Log in to your Online Services account to verify the amounts of any extension or estimated tax payments you've made.

Request direct deposit—it's the easiest, fastest way to get your refund.
Understand your payment options
If you owe a balance on your New York State income tax return, you can pay—or schedule a payment for—any day up to and including the April 18 due date.
You can pay directly from your bank account for free, or with your credit card for a fee.
