In most localities, the deadline to apply for property tax exemptions is March 1. Don’t miss the deadline if you are eligible to receive or renew an exemption, including the seniors, veterans, and Enhanced STAR exemptions.
While the application due date is March 1 in most towns and some cities, there are exceptions. You can find the due date for your municipality and contact information for your assessor in Municipal Profiles.
Turning 65 this year?
You may be eligible for the Enhanced STAR exemption if you’re turning 65 anytime during this calendar year and:
- you currently receive the Basic STAR exemption;
- all other owners of the property will be at least 65 years of age by December 31, 2023 (unless the other owner is your spouse or sibling); and
- the combined income of all owners and any owner’s spouse who resides at the property was equal to or less than $93,200 in 2021.
To apply, provide the following to your assessor:
If you receive the STAR credit instead of the STAR exemption, you don’t need to apply or take any action. The Tax Department will automatically upgrade you to the Enhanced STAR credit if you qualify.
