Want a career in state government?
In New York State, candidates compete for state job opportunities by participating in civil service examinations.
Tell me more.
There are four types of exams:
Why do I need to take an exam?
Exams help us assess your individual strengths and weaknesses, as well as your ability to successfully carry out your job duties.
To help you prepare, the Department of Civil Service website has general study guides, as well as some specific study guides for exams designed to test specialized knowledge, like legal terminology.
Tip: You can find the study guide for any exam in the exam announcement.
Where do I find exam announcements?
All exam announcements are posted on the Department of Civil Service website at Exam announcements, and tax-related positions and exams are also posted directly on the Tax Department website at Employment opportunities.
Announcements provide details about:
- the exam, including the minimum qualifications and instructions for applying; and
- the positions you may be eligible for after taking the exam, including the title, salary, and duties.
We encourage you to sign up for these exams for Tax Department positions by the December 28 deadline:
At the Tax Department, we're also continuously recruiting for Auditor 1 (Tax) positions. See if you qualify for the Auditor Trainee 1 (Tax) exam or Auditor 1 (Tax) exam.

Why should I work for the Tax Department or another state agency?
Our work makes a difference. State workers provide valuable services to millions of their fellow New Yorkers, and touch every part of public life—including education, environmental conservation, and even health care.
We also have great benefits, including comprehensive vision and dental insurance and a 37.5-hour work week. Telecommuting opportunities may also be available.
