We’ve begun issuing homeowner tax rebate checks!
We recently began mailing nearly three million checks for the 2022 homeowner tax rebate credit (HTRC) to eligible New Yorkers.
The credit provides direct property tax relief in the form of checks to eligible homeowners. The amount of the credit will depend on:
- your home’s location,
- your income, and
- whether you receive Basic or Enhanced STAR (School Tax Relief).
Am I eligible?
To be eligible, you must have:
- qualified for a 2022 STAR credit or exemption,
- had income that was less than or equal to $250,000 for the 2020 income tax year, and
- a school tax liability for the 2022–2023 school year that is more than your 2022 STAR benefit.
What do I need to do?
We will automatically mail checks to eligible homeowners. You do not need to take any action unless we send you a letter requesting additional information.
When will I get my check?
Most homeowners will receive their checks in June.
In a small percentage of cases, we need tax information from school districts that is not available until later in the summer.
Regardless, homeowners can expect to receive their checks before the due date for school taxes.
Unfortunately, our contact center cannot provide you with a specific timeframe.
How much money will I get?
To find the amount of your credit, use our Homeowner Tax Rebate Credit (HTRC) Check Lookup:
Note: By law, the Tax Department cannot issue a homeowner tax rebate check for less than $100.
How do I report this credit on my New York State income tax return?
If you receive a check for the homeowner tax rebate credit, you do not need to do anything on your New York State income tax return unless you itemize your deductions.
