What you need to know
The due date for New York State personal income tax returns for the 2021 tax year is April 18, 2022.
But did you know you can request an automatic six-month filing extension if you can’t file your return by the due date? With an extension, your return is due October 17, 2022.
Note: You can request an extension of time to file your return only. You cannot request an extension of time to pay any tax due.
To file an extension request, you must:
- submit your request by April 18, 2022, and
- properly estimate and pay any 2021 tax liability owed in full.
How to request your extension online
- Submit your request using our Personal Income Tax Extension online service.
- Pay in full any tax you estimate you'll owe on your 2021 tax return.
For payment options, see Make a payment when you have an extension of time to file. Paying through your Online Services account is the fastest and easiest way to make the payment.
If you don't pay with your request, you'll begin to accrue interest, penalties, and additions to tax related to the extension on April 19, 2022.
