Most returns sail through our award-winning, automated fraud-detection review. We hope your return does too!
But some returns require additional information or review before we can process them. In this edition of Tax Tips for Individuals, we’re featuring the primary letter we use to request information about a return: Form DTF-948 or DTF-948-O, Request for Information, (RFI).
What’s on Request for Information letters
This letter asks some taxpayers to send missing information or documentation to verify what they reported on their return. The documentation we request depends on the information we need to verify; not all letters ask for the same documentation.
Why we send Request for Information letters
Typically, we send this letter if we need to verify:
- your amounts of wages and withholding,
- your residency,
- your eligibility for refundable tax credits, or
- your dependent’s Social Security number or date of birth.
Where to view Request for Information letters
If your refund status advises that we’re requesting information, you can see a copy of the letter online only if:
Otherwise, you’ll receive any letter we may send by mail. To receive future correspondence online, update your account preferences from the upper-right corner of your Account Summary homepage.
