Claiming the right dependents

Are you claiming dependents on your personal income tax return? Let us help you claim only those who qualify and provide documentation to support your claim. If you file accurate information, you can avoid processing and refund delays.

The IRS determines who can be claimed as a dependent. Start with the IRS online tool, Whom May I Claim as a Dependent?
If we write to you asking for more information about a dependent you claimed, visit Checklist for acceptable proof of a child or dependent for all the information you’ll need when you respond.
