Grievance Day

Do you pay property taxes in New York State? If so, now is the time to review your property tax assessment. If you believe that the market value listed on the assessment roll is higher than the price your property could be sold for, you may want to request that the assessment be reduced. This is called contesting—or grieving—your assessment.

In most communities, the deadline to grieve your assessment, known as Grievance Day, occurs on the fourth Tuesday in May, which is May 26 this year. Check with your assessor to confirm this year’s Grievance Day, as the date does vary in some localities, and communities have the option to extend the date this year.

Before you request a formal review:

  1. Check your assessment to review the assessor’s estimate of the value of your property. You’ll find the assessment roll on your municipal website.
  2. Learn how to estimate the market value of your property.
  3. If you believe your assessment is too high, speak with your assessor. You may be able to resolve your concerns with an informal conversation.

If you do decide to contest your assessment, visit Grievance procedures for detailed information.
