What you need to know

In response to the impact of COVID-19, the IRS has already begun to distribute Economic Impact Payments (stimulus payments) of $1,200 for individuals with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 and $2,400 for
married couples filing a joint return with adjusted gross income up to $150,000.


Please help us get the word out to your fellow New Yorkers—share with clients, family and friends who may be isolated due to COVID-19.

 

Who needs to take action?

 

While most people will receive their payment automatically, the following groups must visit the IRS at Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here to submit their information using the secure IRS Free File fillable form provided. You don’t need to pay a preparer or other third party to file the form.

 

This step is required to receive a stimulus payment for eligible U.S. citizens or permanent residents who:

  • had gross income that did not exceed $12,200 ($24,400 for married couples) for 2019, or

  • were not otherwise required to file a federal income tax return for 2019, and didn't plan to.

Important: To claim the $500 benefit for each qualifying dependent child under 17, those who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, or who receive SSI, must also visit the IRS at Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here. Act soon to avoid delays to your dependent child benefit.

Who will receive a payment automatically?

 

You don’t need to take any action to automatically receive your stimulus payment if you:

  • filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return and are eligible; or
  • received one of these benefits:

    • Social Security retirement benefits and survivor benefits
    • Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and survivor benefits
    • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits
    • Railroad Retirement and survivor benefits


Where can I find information?

 

The stimulus payment program is managed by the IRS and the United States Treasury. For accurate guidance, including how to provide direct deposit information, filing directions for those who have not filed a return, and to check the status of your payment, visit the IRS at Economic impact payments.

 

Where can I find my account and routing number for direct deposit?

 

You can find your checking account number and your bank’s nine-digit routing number on one of your checks (see image below). If you use an online banking application, you should find the information you need in your mobile banking app.

 

If you don’t have a checking account, you can request direct deposit into your savings account, if you have one. Your savings account number is available on your pre-printed deposit slips, your passbook, or other bank records. Your bank can provide your savings account routing number.

Do I need to file a New York State personal income tax form to receive the stimulus payment?

 

No. A New York State tax return has no impact on eligibility for the stimulus payment.

 

How can I verify information about stimulus payments or offers of assistance?

Rely on trusted sites and remember, the government will never call to ask for your Social Security number, bank account, or credit card number.
