Update to the 2018 and 2019 Forms IT-196, New York Resident, Nonresident, and Part-Year Resident Itemized Deductions, and their instructions

The Department of Taxation and Finance has posted form updates that impact certain individuals who paid or accrued mortgage insurance premiums during the 2018 or 2019 tax year.

The federal Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2020 was enacted on December 20, 2019. This federal bill extends, through tax year 2020, the previously expired deduction for mortgage insurance premiums.

Qualifying mortgage insurance premiums should be reported on line 11 of the 2018 Form IT-196 and line 13 of the 2019 Form IT-196. Updated instructions for these lines can be found by visiting the following webpages:

If you paid or accrued mortgage insurance premiums during the 2018 tax year, and you already filed your 2018 return, you should file an amended return if this update results in a change to your refund or tax due.
