Tax Tips for Individuals

Sooooooo close!

Sometimes, even when you try your best, things don't go as planned. Amending your New York State income tax return is the do-over you need to:

  • add something you forgot (like a W-2 from a part-time job),
  • claim a credit or deduction you missed, or
  • update your return to account for changes the IRS made to your federal return.

When you amend—using either Form IT-201-X or Form IT-203-X—it’s like filing a new state return. And if your amended New York State return is for the current year or either of the past two years (2016–2018), you can e-file.

Tips for amending your return

  • Include all forms that support the information in your amended return (even if you already submitted these forms with your original return). This includes forms for credits you are claiming or amending, forms you submitted with your original return that are still applicable, and all your wage and tax statements, such as Form IT-2.

  • E-file your return. If you e-filed your original, your software will already have the information saved from your first return. Your software vendor can assist you with how to enter your corrected information.

  • Have a copy of your original return at hand, especially if you originally filed your state return by paper.

  • If the IRS makes final changes to your federal return, review your New York State return to determine whether you need to amend to account for the federal changes. (If you do, file your amended return within 90 days to ensure you won't owe penalty and interest because you forgot to amend.)

  • If you are due an additional refund, track the status of your amended refund using Check Your Refund (for years 2015-2018).

Visit How to change or amend a filed return for more information.

If you're e-filing your amended return and need to contact your software vendor, visit E-file approved commercial software: Personal income tax, which provides the contact information for most New York State approved software vendors.
