How to Respond to a Tax Department Notice or Letter

NYS Tax Department Shares Security Tips During National Tax Security Awareness Week

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance today reminded taxpayers to review and respond to all Tax Department communications.

Any unexpected correspondence from the Tax Department may be a sign that your identity has been stolen. If you suspect this is the case, contact the Tax Department immediately to determine whether this has, in fact, occurred.

“If you receive an unexpected notice or letter from us and doubt that it’s legitimate, please call us as soon as possible to confirm your suspicion; otherwise, follow the steps provided to resolve the issue,” said Acting Commissioner Nonie Manion. “Ignoring the letter or notice will only amplify the problem by causing, for example, penalties and interest to accrue on taxes owed.”

Our customer service representatives are available 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 518-457-5181.

If you receive a letter asking for documentation to support entries on your return, it doesn't mean that you did anything wrong. It's one of several steps we take to ensure that returns and refunds claimed are accurate. Our goal is to stop questionable returns and refund claims, not to delay refunds owed.

The best way to communicate with the Tax Department is to request electronic communications for both Bills and Related Notices and Other Notifications as follows:

  1. Log in to your current Online Services account or create one.
  2. Select your name in the upper right-hand corner of your Account Summary homepage.
  3. Select Preferences from the drop-down menu.
  4. On the Electronic Communications page, check the boxes next to Bills and Related Notices and Other Notifications.

When you select both options, we'll email you when we issue your refund and alert you to any future correspondence.

To reply to a letter or notice securely, log in to your Online Services account and use our Respond to Department Notice online service. It’s the easiest and fastest way to provide the Tax Department with additional information.

Depending on the notice you received and your response, you may need to attach scanned documents. For assistance with responding online, view our Respond to a Department Notice and Respond to a Department Bill demos.
