STAR credit denial letters
As we issue STAR credit checks, we also mail letters regarding eligibility to property owners who:
- are not eligible for the credit, or
- need to provide additional information so we can confirm that they are qualified for the credit.
As an example, the most common denial letter we send is to property owners who registered for the STAR credit but are receiving the STAR exemption this year.
Each of our letters encourages property owners to contact us or visit our website if they have questions. If a property owner does contact you about such a letter, please advise them to follow the instructions on the letter:
- If they agree with the letter, no action is necessary.
- If they disagree, they can respond in writing.
- If they have questions, they should call 518-457-2036.
Where to send RP-496 exemption renunciation forms
The notification section of the RP-496 instructions (page 2) reads:
After entering the amount owed in Part 2 of the application, the County Director shall return the application to the property owner. The Director also shall send a copy of the application to the assessor, and in the case of a STAR exemption, a copy to the Commissioner of Taxation and Finance.

County Treasurers should send any STAR-related renunciation payments they receive to this same address.
