The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has issued the following press release:

DEC to Hold Informational Meeting on October 16th to Advise People on How to Avoid Human/Bear Conflicts

The State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 5 office will host an informational meeting on Thursday, Oct. 16 to highlight steps business owners and the general public should take to prevent nuisance bear situations.

The meeting will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, 813 Mirror Lake Drive, Lake Placid.

The meeting will be led by DEC Wildlife Technician Benjamin Tabor who will cover the following topics:

  • Black bear natural history and food habits
  • Human-caused conflicts with black bears
  • Proactive methods to prevent bear problems
  • DEC response to human-bear conflict
  • The future of bear management in New York State

Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss issues of concern with Jim Morganson, Village of Lake Placid /Town of North Elba Code Enforcement Officer and Bill Meyers, local representative for Casella Waste Management.
