This fall, hunting mentors in Oneida, Madison County hosted a women’s goose hunt through CNYMyHunts.org. More than 18 women signed up but due to a limited number of mentors 12 women were chosen to participate. The women came from all across NY and two were from out-of-state.
The women arrived on Friday and were welcomed with a wild game dinner put on by the mentors. The hunters got to know each other as they reviewed hunting safety information and learned the details of the weekend hunt.
On Saturday morning they hunted an area that had geese on it all week. Unfortunately, the geese did not show up that morning. On Sunday they went to another location and were able to harvest 40 geese that morning.
During their time in the field, the hunters learned how to set up blinds and the geese decoys and how to clean the geese they harvested. They also built lasting friendships with the women they hunted with.
If you are interested in attending a mentored hunt, visit DEC’s HuntFishNY Events page to register for upcoming events. Check back if you don’t see hunts in your area right now. To learn more visit DEC’s Learn to Hunt Opportunities page.

Don’t miss out on your chance to get afield during the late season! Multiple late-season Sponsored Pheasant Hunts are currently open for registration, including events designed for first-time license buyers, novice, women, veterans, and underrepresented hunters. Dozens of seats are still open, and interested participants can learn about and register for these opportunities through DEC’s HuntFishNY Events page.
In addition, applications to host sponsored pheasant hunts are still being accepted until January 10th. Sponsored pheasant hunts can be hosted at any point during an open pheasant season and can provide hunting opportunities to new or inexperienced hunters well after big game seasons have ended across much of the state. Those interested in hosting a Sponsored Pheasant Hunt can find a link to the application on DEC’s Learn to Hunt Opportunities page.
Sponsored hunts are free, non-competitive events open to the public and coordinated by a group, club, individual, or organization to benefit youth, women, first-time hunters, veterans, people with disabilities, and other underrepresented groups. The DEC provides pheasants for stocking, free of cost, with a maximum of two pheasants per registered hunter. A valid New York state hunting license is required for all participants.
