Draft New York State Solid Waste Management Plan – Public Comment Period Now OpenTo protect communities and mitigate the effects of climate change, the draft New York State Solid Waste Management Plan (Plan) builds upon sustained efforts to reduce waste and advance the state’s transition to a circular economy, helping to change New Yorkers’ understanding of waste and their relationship to it. This Plan is intended to guide actions over the next decade, from the beginning of 2023 to the end of 2032, and builds upon the State’s 2010 Beyond Waste Plan. The Plan sets forth six major Focus Areas with goals and action items to move towards a circular economy and to move the materials management industry forward in New York State:
View the draft New York State Solid Waste Management Plan. Public Comment Period Persons wishing to comment on the Plan have the opportunity to submit written comments until May 15, 2023. Comments can be submitted by email to NYSSolidWastePlan@dec.ny.gov. Please include “Comments on SSWMP” in the subject line of the email. Informational Webinar on Draft New York State Solid Waste Management Plan DEC will be hosting an informational webinar Tuesday, April 11, 2023. During this time DEC will review the key elements of the Plan and allow attendees to ask questions.
2022 Report on the Implementation of the NYS Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling Law Now Available!The New York State Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling law was passed in 2019 and took effect on January 1, 2022, requiring large businesses and institutions that generate an annual average of two tons or more of wasted food per week to donate edible food to the maximum extent practicable and to recycle remaining food scraps when there is a viable organics recycling facility with capacity within 25 miles. The report provides an overview of the implementation of the NYS Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling law since its passage in 2019, and DEC’s efforts to develop a successful food donation and food scraps recycling program in New York State with assistance from established partners NYS Pollution Prevention Institute, Center for EcoTechnology and Feeding NYS. Compost Research College Scholarship - Accepting Applications!The Compost Research & Education Foundation (CREF) is offering scholarships to undergraduate through PhD students, studying at a college or university in the US, interested in doing a compost-related research project. The scholarship is for $4,000 and also includes an invitation to present research findings at a U.S. Composting Council Annual Conference during a CREF research session. Applications are due April 14, 2023. The goal of this scholarship is to bring assistance to students doing compost-related research and to spark interest in future careers in the composting industry.
