DEC & SCA Seeking Candidates for Paid Summer Internship

Qualified Candidates,16-week Internship Starts in May

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), in partnership with the Student Conservation Association (SCA), is seeking to recruit a Natural Resource Steward to serve on public lands in the Old Forge area during the 2021 field season. This SCA internship will start in late May and last through the summer; the end date will be determined by the student's scheduled return to school. The individual in this position will perform a variety of duties that support the preservation, protection, and enhancement of the area's natural resources, as well as the safety and well-being of the general public using these resources. These duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Engaging the public in promoting Leave-No-Trace™ principles and general hiking safety;
  • Inspecting trails, camping areas, and other facilities to document maintenance needs; and
  • Assisting DEC staff and other partners in working on larger bridge projects and other trail-related work.

Eligible interns are 18 years of age or older with a valid driver's license. The ability to use a map and compass, GPS unit, and strong backpacking and general outdoor skills are essential. This position requires the willingness and ability to hike and work alone or in small groups in oftentimes remote, rugged terrain and inclement weather conditions. Camping in the backcountry may also be required.
