Celebrate Flood Awareness Week

Next week, March 8 - 14, is Flood Awareness Week in New York. Floods are the most common and expensive natural disasters. To help New Yorkers be more prepared for the next flooding event, DEC's Division of Water will highlight topics related to flooding in DEC Facebook posts and Instagram stories every day next week. Topics will include flood insurance, floodplain development permits, and DEC's role in the National Flood Insurance Program. To learn more about floodplain management, check out DEC's Facebook and Instagram posts during Flood Awareness Week and/or visit DEC's Floodplain Management webpage.

Annual Water Withdrawal Reporting Reminder

The DEC Water Withdrawal Reporting Program is currently receiving water withdrawal reporting data for 2019. Reporting is required by March 31 each year for non-agricultural facilities that have a withdrawal capacity of 100,000 gallons or more per day and agricultural facilities that use 100,000 gallons or more per day (30 day average). Agricultural facilities that use less than 100,000 gallons per day can register by using the annual water withdrawal reporting form. For additional information, contact Water Withdrawal Reporting staff at 518-402-8182 or AWQRSDEC@dec.ny.gov.

Celebrate National Groundwater Awareness Week

Groundwater Awareness

The National Groundwater Association has announced that March 8 - 14, 2020 is National Groundwater Awareness Week. Groundwater is an often misunderstood resource that provides a quarter of New Yorkers, and half of all Americans, with their drinking water. Visit DEC's Groundwater webpage to learn more about groundwater in New York State and common groundwater misconceptions.
