World Environment Day and World Oceans Day

Celebrate World Environment Day June 5th and work together to #BeatAirPollution! An easy way everyone can promote good air quality is by recycling. Recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution compared to making products with virgin materials and sending materials to the landfill. For a greener future, we can all do our part on World Environment Day and every day by making sure we recycle items that are accepted by our local recycling programs.

Prevent Plastic Pollution Only a couple days later, celebrate World Oceans Day, June 8th! Did you know 50 percent of plastic waste generated globally is from plastic packaging? Since plastic is lightweight and buoyant, it travels easily into streams, rivers, lakes and the ocean as litter, clogging waterways and water infrastructure. Common single-use plastics that can litter our waterways include utensils, straws, coffee stirrers, Styrofoam, coffee pods, and certain types of takeout containers. We can all help protect our oceans by making simple swaps to reduce our use of single-use plastics. Consider these options:

Have an “on the go” bag with reusable options ready when you need them
Switch to reusable coffee pods if possible
Plan ahead
Think before you buy, and sticking to “If you can’t reuse, refuse!”
