Saltwater Fishing & Boating Newsletter |
Report Your Recreational Striped Bass FishingStriped bass (Morone saxatilis) recreational fishing season is here, and you can help DEC collect valuable fishing effort data on stripers in New York. By participating in the Striped Bass Cooperative Angler (SBCA) Program, you have the opportunity to provide logs of your fishing trips and scale samples that will be analyzed by DEC staff to determine the age of the striped bass you caught. This information is reported back to our participants and is also shared in an annual newsletter at the end of each season. For more information on participating in the SBCA program: If you're fishing in New York's marine waters (south of George Washington Bridge), contact sbcaprogram@dec.ny.gov or call (631) 380-3314. If you are fishing in the Hudson River region (north of the George Washington Bridge), contact Jessica.best@dec.ny.gov or call (845) 256-3009. Striped bass saltwater fishing regulations:

It is normal that seals haul out on the shore. They are not necessarily stranded or in need of help. Although it can be tempting to get close when you see one, please remember to keep your distance – at least the legally required distance of 150 feet! This distance is to protect both you and the seal! Never chase seals back into the water. Never cover seals or try to pick up pups. These actions stress the animal and can cause illness or even death. Also, seals may look cute, but they are wild animals with sharp teeth. They can bite when provoked and can carry diseases that can be transferred to people or pets. If you do think that a seal is sick or injured, please call the NY Stranding Hotline at 631-369-9829 to report the animal. Please provide the location, details, and your contact information so that the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation’s trained biologists and staff may assess the situation, as well as the condition of the animal. Expired Federal Documentation ReminderDue to delays associated with the federal government shutdown, DEC Marine Permit Office will continue to accept expired federal vessel documentation for those individuals and corporations renewing their 2019 permits and licenses through May 1, 2019. DEC reminds those that have already received their 2019 permits using expired documentation to submit current copies of their documentation by May 1, 2019. Contact the Marine Permit Office by calling (631) 444-0470, by email, or by mail to: NYSDEC Marine Permit Office Survey for Commercial Fishing Assessment in Suffolk CountyThe Suffolk County Department of Economic Development & Planning, in collaboration with New York Sea Grant, Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program, and the Long Island Commercial Fishing Association, are working to develop an up-to-date profile of the Long Island commercial fishing industry. The profile will evaluate the needs of local commercial fishermen and will characterize the harvesting and processing capacity of the industry, support businesses, and people engaged in this livelihood. This survey is for Suffolk County commercial fishermen and will be used to guide and assist in providing the resources necessary to support a viable and sustainable fishing industry.
