DEC Asks Public Not to Use Nick's Lake Campground after Season Closes on September 3

Construction Underway on D-Loop and Infrastructure

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today that work will begin Tuesday, September 4, to upgrade infrastructure and build a new D-Loop comfort station at Nick's Lake Campground in Old Forge, Herkimer County. Due to this extensive construction, DEC is advising the public that the campground will close on September 3, and historical use of the property during early bear hunting season and/or casual use is prohibited during construction.

The project includes plans to replace most of the water lines throughout the campground; install an underground electrical distribution system; update campsites #75 and #77 to current accessibility standards; and build a new D-Loop comfort station. Burying the electrical lines will reduce storm-related power outages at the campground and eliminate the need for yearly tree trimming.

Directed by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's Adventure NY initiative to connect more New Yorkers with nature, DEC has committed $1.5 million of NY Works funding to the project. DEC anticipates these improvements will be complete in 2019.
