Enclosures Installed at Bath Fish Hatchery

Caledonia Enclosures Birds and other fish predators are a constant problem at fish hatcheries.  At the Bath Fish Hatchery, over 30,000 fish are lost to these fish consumers each year. The new enclosures installed over the hatchery's raceways are designed to keep the critters out and will also reduce sun exposure which can be harmful to trout.

Coho Salmon

Attention Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon Anglers

A reminder that the DEC and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry are looking for heads from Coho Salmon caught in Lake Ontario in 2018. You can find information on the program, including how you can arrange a pickup for collected fish heads, on DEC's website.

Visit the Lake Ontario/St. Lawrence River research webpage for more information on current research activities.

Keeping Kids In Tune With Nature

Region 8 OutreachEach year the Bureau of Fisheries teaches thousands of New Yorkers to fish through its I FISH NY program. Just recently, DEC Region 8 staff conducted a fish sampling demonstration at the Beechwood 4-H Camp on the shores of Lake Ontario. The 5-12 year old campers had a chance to get close and personal with various Lake Ontario fish and amphibians and helped release them when the program was complete.

Training youth counselors how to teach the sport of fishing to kids is a priority effort of the I FISH NY program. This past year, over 50 programs were conducted reaching over 500 counselors. If you run a camp or know of one that would like to participate in our program next year, please contact us.

Go Fish NYC Reservoirs

Muscoot Brown TroutOften overlooked by anglers due to restricted boating access, as reflected by this huge 31+ inch brown trout captured during a recent survey of Muscoot Reservoir, the New York City Reservoir system continues to provides some of the finest fishing in New York State. Many are located within easy driving distance of the metropolitan area and provide excellent fishing for a variety of trout species, as well as walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass and panfish. The reservoirs are administered by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). Access permits and other information concerning the NYCDEP boating and fishing access permit program can be found on the NYCDEP website.  Additional information on fishing the reservoir system can be found here.
