Camping with the Environment in Mind

Camp Sust 1Do you love spending quality family time in nature but feel like you produce too much waste? Help the DEC protect the environment while camping by following these tips. You will be helping to ensure that you and your family can enjoy camping for years to come.

These tips can also apply to any outdoor adventure you have this summer, be it a backyard cookout, a day hike, or a lakeside picnic.

• Cut down on waste and save money by using reusable plates and utensils. Many DEC campgrounds now have sinks for washing dishes to make clean-up a breeze!

• Remove food from bulky packaging and portion your meals to save space in the cooler and cut down on food waste.

• Recycle! All DEC campgrounds require campers to recycle. Check out what materials can be recycled at your campground when you arrive to separate appropriately while camping.

• Instead of buying a pack of water bottles, pack reusable water bottles and a bulk water jug.  DEC campgrounds have potable water to fill up your reusable bottles and jugs!

• Don’t throw plastic cups, food wrappers, or other trash into the fire. Burning trash causes pollution and health risks. Learn more about the risks associated with burning trash. Don’t forget, when it comes to campfires, it’s safety first. Find helpful tips to keep campers safe around the fire.
