DEC "Conservation Station" Opened at NYS Zoo at Thompson Park on Earth Day

Saturday, April 21, 2018 The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) marked Earth Day at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park in Watertown with the official opening of the DEC "Conservation Station". Located within the Zoo's new Conservation Center (formerly the nocturnal building), visitors can learn about invasive species; the animals in the young forest; fire towers; and DEC careers. Families will also enjoy the interactive exhibit featuring animal tracks.

"Any opportunity to work with the zoo as well as to educate the public and share what we do is a good day. The Conservation Station is family friendly and a great example of what can be done through collaboration and forward thinking," said Judy Drabicki, DEC Region 6 Director.

"It's a natural collaboration. Both the DEC and the New York State Zoo have missions that focus on conservation and education. Zoo visitors will be struck by the contrast of the DEC's new Conservation Station area with what had been the old nocturnal exhibits. We appreciate DEC coming on board so early and helping to make this bright, fun and educational experience a reality," said Dr. Mark Irwin, DVM and the Zoo's Board Chairperson.

DEC wildlife and fisheries technicians, as well as, others were at the zoo for Earth Day. Smokey . The zoo is open to the public 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
