Explaining HRECOS real-time data at Norrie PointHudson RiverNet
News from the Hudson River Estuary Program

What is the temperature of the Hudson River at Albany right now? How much salt or oxygen is in the water at Poughkeepsie? Piermont?

HRECOS station at Pier 84 in NYCSince 2008, the data from real-time monitoring stations operated by the Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System (HRECOS) have helped scientists answer basic questions about river processes and enhanced waterway management decisions.

HRECOS is a network of 16 water quality and weather monitoring stations in the Hudson River watershed, from Utica on the upper Mohawk River to the Hudson River, down to the New York/New Jersey harbors. Every 15 minutes, stations record data on an array of variables—such as temperature, salinity, oxygen, and water levels. The information is continually transmitted to the HRECOS website, where anyone can view and download current and historical data.

By keeping an eye on the Hudson River 24/7, this fleet of remote sensors serves as an invaluable tool for water resource and ecosystem managers, educators, research scientists, river pilots, emergency managers, and even recreational users. HRECOS is operated by a consortium of 15 governmental, academic, and non-profit partner organizations. Check it out at HRECOS.org!
