DEC Announces Completion of Glenville Water Line Extension Near Former Kenco Chemical Corporation Site

Construction Completion Report Now Available to Public

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced the completion of an extension of a public water supply line to serve the residents of the Sunnyside Gardens neighborhood in the town of Glenville. The project was part of an Interim Remedial Measure (IRM) put in place by DEC to aggressively address groundwater contamination originating from the Former Kenco Chemical Company (Kenco) site located at 107 Freemans Bridge Road.

"Protecting public health in these neighborhoods is DEC's top priority and the quick completion of this project to connect these homes to the public water supply will ensure these families have access to a steady source of clean drinking water," Commissioner Seggos said. "I commend our staff for working quickly to advance this portion of our remediation project as we continue to address contamination in the area."

Work to connect one hundred homes along Old Sunnyside Road and Sunnyside Gardens to the public water supply began in the summer of 2015. A DEC water line contractor installed 2,800 feet of 12-inch water main along Sunnyside Road and 4,080 feet of 8-inch water line throughout the Sunnyside Gardens Neighborhood. Property restoration and warranty work were completed this fall. This IRM cost approximately $2 million and was funded by DEC through the State's Superfund program.

"I want to thank the DEC for all their work in ensuring that our residents are on the town's safe and clean water supply," said Supervisor Chris Koetzle. "This was a critically important project to our residents and I am proud that the town and state worked so closely together to ensure they were protected from any potential threat."

The Kenco site parcel is approximately 0.86 acres in size and historically was used for chemical distribution and warehousing by Kenco and Voelker Sales Inc. until approximately 1999. Investigations of the site culminated in two Records of Decision, 2015 and 2017, for remediation of the source area and off-site area, respectively. The primary contaminants of concern are volatile organic compounds, including, cis-1,2-dichloroethene, trichloroethene, and tetrachloroethene. The remedial design for the source area remedial program is underway and remedial action is expected to begin in early 2018.
