“Science on the River” free open house at the Norrie Point Environmental Center, Staatsburg NY, on Saturday Sept. 23rdThe NYS DEC Hudson River Research Reserve invites you to join in celebrating its 35th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. The open house at Norrie Point in Staatsburg, Dutchess County, will feature science demonstrations by river experts, opportunities to go fishing (free-of-charge with gear provided), explore a tidal marsh by canoe, and observe rehabilitated wildlife, and an array of hands-on activities for children. This event is free, family friendly, and a great way to celebrate National Estuaries Week! Directions to Norrie Point.
Hudson River Sloop Woody Guthrie Sets Sail After RestorationThe Hudson River Sloop Woody Guthrie returned to service during a celebration at the Beacon, New York waterfront on August 26 after a multi-year restoration effort. The Woody Guthrie was built in 1978, and was originally owned by Pete and Toshi Seeger, who later donated the boat to the Beacon Sloop Club. Beacon Sloop Club volunteers helped sail and maintain the vessel over the last four decades, providing free access to the Hudson River to tens of thousands of people. Free educational sails will resume again this fall. The sloop restoration work was done at the Riverport Wooden Boat School at the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston. The project included extensive repairs, including replacement of nearly all the ship’s frames, planks, structural timbers, a portion of the decking, and a section of the keel.
The cost of the restoration was $400,000. DEC awarded a $100,000 ‘River Access and Education” grant for the project, administered by the Hudson River Estuary Program, in support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s initiative to expand recreational opportunities for New Yorkers and visitors to the state. The funds were provided by the Environmental Protection Fund. Top Photo: Chris Bowser
Hudson River Estuary Habitats Designated as Critical for Atlantic SturgeonThe National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), also known as NOAA Fisheries, recently announced critical habitat designations for the Atlantic sturgeon—an endangered species that spawns in the Hudson River estuary. Specific habitats within the tidal Hudson River from New York Harbor to the federal dam in Troy are among the protected areas. NOAA Fisheries selected 31 waterways throughout the Atlantic coast, from the Saint Mary's River on the Florida-Georgia line to Maine's Penobscot River, for the protective designations. DEC’s Hudson and Delaware Fisheries Unit gathers data on the migratory sturgeon to learn about seasonal fish movement, food sources, and to determine population trends.
