Saltwater Fishing and Boating Newsletter |
Shark FishingNew York is home to many species of sharks, from white sharks and makos to dusky sharks and sandbars.
If you decide to try your hand at shark fishing, here are a few things you should know before you go:
Sharks are apex predators (they are at the top of the food chain) and an important part of the marine ecosystem. While fishing, if you don’t intend to keep a shark, it is important to release it in a way that increases its chance of survival. Learn more about the safe handling and release of sharks. Great South Bay Trawl Survey2017 is the pilot year for the Great South Bay trawl survey. This will be a long-term independent survey which will help the Division of Marine Resources obtain data for blue crab, whelk, and juvenile finfish species found in the estuary. For your safety and ours, please stay at least 200’ away from our vessel the "R/V Philip Briggs" if you come across us while we are trawling.
