Harmful Algal Bloom Notifications

New waterbodies with harmful algal blooms (HABs) have been added today, August 4, to DEC’s Harmful Algal Blooms Notifications webpage.

This week, 17 waterbodies were added to the notification list. There are currently 60 waterbodies with blooms on the list.

What does the HABs Archive Page tell you?

The HABs Archive Page is a valuable resource when planning water recreation activities. The webpage is updated weekly during the notification season (late spring through fall) with the waterbodies that no longer have evidence of a bloom. The waterbody name, county, last known status date and the bloom status are listed in the table. Because bloom conditions can change frequently some waterbodies may be listed multiple times.

At the end of the notification season, the information on the archive web page is summarized in a document and posted on the webpage. For more detailed information on what the DEC HABs Program does, view the HABs Program Guide (PDF, 1.8 MB).

Avoid and Report Suspected Blooms

Because waterbodies may have harmful algal blooms that have not been reported to DEC, we recommend avoiding contact with floating mats, scum and discolored water.

If you suspect you have seen a harmful algal bloom, or you, your family, or pet has been in contact with a harmful algal bloom, please follow the instructions for reporting a bloom to DEC. If you see it, avoid it and report it!

New EPA Financing Opportunities Tool

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched the Water Finance Clearinghouse, a searchable database to help communities find funding opportunities for drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure.
