DEC Announces Community Water Chestnut "Hand Pull" at Lakeview Marsh Wildlife Management Area (WMA)

Invasive Species Awareness Week: July 9 - 16, 2017

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) invites the public to assist with hand removal of Water Chestnut from Lakeview Marsh Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The Water Chestnut is an invasive species that competes with native aquatic vegetation and is a nuisance to recreational activities, such as, fishing and boating. Water Chestnut leaves float on the surface and its stems reach down to the bottom of the wetland. The leaves form tangled mats that cover the water. DEC staff and volunteers will kayak or canoe onto the water and "hand pull" the invasive species from Lakeview Marsh WMA.

Where: South Sandy Creek canoe/kayak launch, NYS Route 3. View Lakeview Marsh Map (PDF, 1.8 MB). Group will paddle into Lakeview Marsh WMA.
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Invasive species week is used to promote knowledge and understanding of invasive species and prevent their spreading. Invasive species affect all New Yorkers, from hikers to highway personnel; from birders to boaters; and farmers to foresters. Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the activity and are asked to bring their own canoe or kayak and safety equipment.
