Environmental Conservation Police Officer Why I became an Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO) - - ECO Mike Arp, Region 4 Capital Region ![]() "I grew up in the Catskills. I have been hunting and fishing my whole life. I come from a long line of law enforcement. My dad was a trooper. I have three siblings all in law enforcement, either active or retired, so I knew I wanted to get into law enforcement. What better way to encompass hunting, fishing, being outside and getting into law enforcement." What is the most rewarding part of the job? "Being able to help people every day, whether over the phone or someone comes up to you during the course of the day looking for a simple answer. If you can help them out, you help them out. You walk away with a handshake every day, that's a good thing." Learn more about ECO duties from Officer Arp at Portrait of an ECO.
