Greener Choices in Personal Transportation

For most New Yorkers the largest part of our carbon footprint comes from transportation. Driving to and from work, driving to the store, driving out of town for the weekend, basically, driving period. This holds true for New York State’s entire economy as well, as transportation emissions make up 34% of our total greenhouse gas emissions, almost equaling those from the commercial and industrial sectors combined.

This means that transportation represents a huge opportunity to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and there are simple steps that you can take to lower yours, that, combined with steps the State is taking, can help us to fight climate change. These include minimizing the need to travel long distances, biking or walking, taking public transportation, driving an electric vehicle, or simply driving less.

The easiest way to reduce emissions from transportation is to simply have to travel less often, and if you do have to travel, use people power to do it. By choosing to live in a walkable/bikeable community you not only reduce the need (and hassle) of commuting long distances and having to drive to run even a small errand, but you also enhance the quality of life in your community by supporting development in our downtowns and reducing gridlock on our roads. This concept is called Smart Growth and the State has been promoting smart growth plans in communities to strengthen local economies and decrease emissions. In addition, New York’s Complete Streets law has ensured that new transportation projects incorporate accommodations for bikes and pedestrians, making people powered commutes easier.

If you can’t walk or bike, consider using public transportation. It costs less than commuting by car AND allows you to be productive during your commute (morning crossword, anyone?). You can learn more about transit service in your community by using 511’s Transit Trip Planner at: https://511ny.org/

Unfortunately for many of us, we have to drive to get around. But you can still significantly reduce your footprint by driving an electric vehicle (EV)! And if you combine driving your EV with renewable energy (solar/wind/hydro), you can have emissions free driving. You can learn more about EVs from an article in the February 2016 issue of the Conservationist: http://www.dec.ny.gov/pubs/105006.html

Tips to Lower GHGs From Driving

Not in the market for a new vehicle? You can still lower your footprint by not idling your vehicle, carpooling, and combining trips so that you drive less.

Overall, there are many ways that we can reduce our transportation emissions, all it takes is finding the way that works best for you!
