DEC has temporarily closed two gates that provide vehicular access to Catskill Forest Preserve lands in Ulster County.
Onteora Lake, Bluestone Wild Forest. The road to the second parking lot at Onteora Lake (nearer to the lake) is closed. The first parking lot near Route 28 will remain open and be plowed through the winter.
Alder Lake, Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest. The gate to Alder Lake in the Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest in the Town of Hardenburgh is also closed. There is parking for only one or two cars in front of the gate.
These closures are necessary as winter conditions have made travel on the access roads by motor vehicle hazardous. The gates will remain closed until mid- to late March when snow and ice are no longer an issue.
DEC will evaluate road conditions on a weekly basis and reopen the gates as soon as conditions allow.
See the list of all seasonal road closures in the Ulster and Sullivan County sections of the Catskill Park.
