Burn Ban in Effect in Dutchess County
Now through May 14, 2025

As dry, windy conditions continue, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued a Burn Ban for Dutchess County as well as the lower Hudson Valley region. This is an extension of the agency's annual statewide ban on burning that takes effect on March 16th. The burn ban is in effect now through May 14, 2025.

Burn Ban imageSince Sunday, March 9th, more than 10 brush fires have been reported, and contained, in Dutchess County. This extension of the DEC's annual ban, which has been March16-May14 annually since 2009, will help prevent wildfires and protect communities as increased conditions for the rapid spread of fires continue across the county and region.

The burn ban prohibits the starting of outdoor fires for purposes of brush and debris disposal, as well as uncontained campfires, and open fires used for cooking. Backyard fire pits and contained campfires less than three feet in height and four feet in length, width, or diameter are allowed, as are small, contained cooking fires.

According to the DEC, open burning is the "single greatest cause" of wildfires in New York. For more information about the annual ban and tips about fire safety and prevention, visit DEC's FIREWISE New York webpage.
