Poughkeepsie…The Dutchess County Department of Public Works (DPW) has announced work will begin to reconstruct a portion of Crum Elbow Road (CR 41), between Cardinal Road and Matuk Drive in the Town of Hyde Park, to enhance roadway safety and minimize seasonal flooding. As part of the project, the road will be raised slightly, drainage systems will be replaced, shoulders will be expanded, and new guide rails, pavement, signs, striping and a stabilized highway embankment under the road will be installed. Work is anticipated to begin on or around April 4th. Crum Elbow Road averages approximately 8,100 vehicles per day.

“Improvements to Crum Elbow Road are a major priority for our scheduled road projects this year. This reconstruction project will provide a safer pathway for all residents traveling on this busy roadway. Residents are advised to seek alternate routes if possible to avoid significant traffic in this area during the morning and evening rush hours,” said County Executive Marc Molinaro.

Crum Elbow Road will be closed to through traffic and a detour route will be posted. Residents will continue to have access to their properties along Crum Elbow Road throughout the construction process and all businesses in the vicinity of the project will remain open and accessible. “Crum Elbow Road is a heavily trafficked area in the Town of Hyde Park, and this construction project will help to increase safety and address flooding concerns. Residents are reminded to use extra caution and slow down in and around the work zone to maintain safety for project workers and other motorists,” said County Legislator Will Truitt.

Motorists are advised to exercise extra caution, obey the posted speed limits, traffic advisory signs, and the directions from flaggers in the work zone to ensure the safety of workers and other motorists.

Following the reconstruction project, Crum Elbow Road will be dedicated later this year to Hyde Park teenager Claudio Coppola, who tragically died in a single-car accident in 2012.
