Listen in: I was also given the pleasure of participating in a Workforce Connections Podcast with Mayor Pro Temp Scott Black that aired this month. Read below and be sure to listen in!

News From Your Mayor
Celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May was Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPI) and the City of North Las Vegas was proud to host its first AANHPI Heritage Month event. Attendees were able to experience cultural performances including a Taiko drum group and lion dance, take part in activities such as origami and eat traditional food.
Thanks to NVAAPI Chamber of Commerce, Ninth Island Aunties and HaapiRoots for their partnership in making this event a success!
Welcoming New Companies to North Las Vegas
May was another exciting month for cutting the ribbon on several new businesses in the City of North Las Vegas. We started the month celebrating the official grand opening of Hagen Group and Mikhaiel Logistics’ new 200,000 square foot distribution center. There’s a good chance if you have a pet, that you’ve purchased products from Hagen Group - they’re one of the largest pet product manufacturers in the world!
We closed out the month celebrating with the employees of BELLA+CANVAS on the opening of their new 700,000 square foot distribution center. You may be familiar with their super soft, high quality T-shirts or their Alo Yoga line of clothing.
As the largest and fastest growing premium brand in wholesale apparel, now taking on the retail market with Alo Yoga, we are proud the company chose our city to relocate to.
We thank both companies for investing in the City of North Las Vegas and bringing jobs to our residents. This was exactly the vision of “grownomics” this Council and administration had for the City of North Las Vegas’ long term economic health and wellbeing, and the strategic policies and programs we’ve put into place have allowed it to become a reality. Welcome!
Sprouts Farmers Market Opens New Location in North Las Vegas
I am excited to share that in May, the City of North Las Vegas welcomed the newest Sprouts Farmers Market to the neighborhood on Losee Road and East Centennial Parkway. As we continue to expand as a city, we know our residents want more sit down eateries, healthy food and grocery store options. Sprouts is a wonderful and welcome addition to the area and to our community.
Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate opening day with us and stock up on some good eats.
Olive Garden Ribbon Cutting!
It’s official: Olive Garden opened up their doors at 1250 East Craig Road as the newest addition to Restaurant Row! Congratulations to Justin, Nina and the entire Olive Garden team for bringing this latest dining option - Olive Garden's 24th restaurant opening this year - to North Las Vegas.
Our residents wanted more sit-down options and family eateries. We are so thrilled to have welcomed you to your new home, and I know our residents will definitely be stopping by to show their appreciation (and grab a bowl of breadsticks or two!).
NLV Fire Department Partners with Red Cross to Install Free Smoke Alarms
In early May Councilwoman Garcia-Anderson and I joined 22 volunteers to help install smoke alarms in North Las Vegas Ward 2 homes. The City partnered with the Red Cross to provide the smoke alarms for free as part of the “Sound the Alarm” program. In total, the teams were able to canvass 300 homes and install 39 smoke alarms. We also shared safety information such as how to prevent kitchen and electrical fires, and create a home escape plan. Nationally, home fires claim seven lives every day and we were proud to volunteer to help keep our neighbors safe.
Cinco de Mayo Community Meal Challenge
Councilwoman Garcia-Anderson and I were happy to help serve our community along with our local North Las Vegas restaurant Viva Zapata during the Salvation Army’s Homeless and Vocational Center’s community meal challenge. The event challenges local eateries to provide up to 400 meals on various holidays and cultural celebration days throughout the year to neighbors experiencing homelessness. On Cinco de Mayo we spent the day helping serve the delicious Mexican cuisine to our less-fortunate community members. It was very moving to see the center’s visitors' spirits lifted for the day.
The City of North Las Vegas is proud to have businesses like Viva Zapata in our community who give back to those in need.
Innovative Teacher Awards!
May 17 was a very special City Council meeting - 20 teachers from North Las Vegas schools were recognized for their innovative learning strategies, assessment methods and tools used in their classrooms to help their students learn. Educators were selected by their own school’s leadership and received $5,000 awards from the City of North Las Vegas to continue their amazing work.
THANK YOU to all of the devoted, creative, and innovative City of North Las Vegas teachers who keep our kids learning! This Council prioritizes education for the success of our North Las Vegas students and families, and it is wonderful to have such capable and passionate partners in these educators!
Mariachi Awards at Council
Last month we recognized all of the Mariachi Competition winners from the City of North Las Vegas’ first annual School Mariachi Competition! Each winning school’s Mariachi Director gathered at council to receive the awards for their school. What an amazing competition with so many talented, young individuals. We look forward to seeing what you do at next year’s competition - it will certainly be hard to top this year’s! Congratulations to all the awardees and everyone who participated!
Providing Resources to Our Seniors - Senior Health Fair
During the middle of May, we hosted our first annual Senior Resource Health Fair right here at North Las Vegas City Hall! There were ample information booths and free health screenings for vision, blood pressure, diabetes and more. Residents enjoyed a free lunch, socialized with their North Las Vegas neighbors, participated in raffles, and watched presentations by doctors who specialize in neuropathy, kidney health, dialysis, and dental issues.
It was wonderful to share these resources with our community and I am incredibly grateful for the sponsors and partners who helped make this event such a success. The city looks forward to continuing to host and offer this event in the future.
Celebrating UNLV Women
UNLV’s Women Council has been celebrating the successes of their female faculty and staff for more than 25 years! In addition to advocating for higher quality work-life and contributing to the creation, implementation and monitoring of initiatives designed to ensure equitable and respectful treatment, once a year they come together to acknowledge and celebrate each other’s accomplishments. I was honored to be asked to participate in their Celebrating Our Successes event and have a role in recognizing all of the amazing women awarded that day.
Fentanyl Awareness
As Mayor, I get the opportunity to participate in a lot of meaningful activities and programs. This past month the City of North Las Vegas joined other municipalities, law enforcement and health agencies in a Fentanyl Awareness Summit to look for solutions to the fentanyl crisis.
Community Correctional Center
I also had the chance to meet with women in our North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center (NLV CCC). Opened in 2020, the NLV CCC’s primary focus is on rehabilitation and offers a variety of therapy programs, volunteer opportunities and workforce training.
Flying High - Rancho High School Students Take the Prize
If you didn’t hear, a team of students from Rancho High School’s Academy of Aviation recently won an international high school engineering challenge! This is the second time Rancho’s team has won the Real World Design Challenge, resulting in $50,000 scholarships from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida for each team member. Congratulations to the amazing students, their families and team coaches.
You can read about the team and competition in this article.
It’s Out! Workforce Connections Podcast
I’m excited to share that I was invited to participate in a Workforce Connections podcast to talk about the amazing growth the City of North Las Vegas is continuing to experience, and the many ways our city and Workforce Connections partner with each other.
I was lucky to have a great host to interview me - our very own Mayor Pro Tem Scott Black. The podcast can be viewed and listened to here.
NLV Police Department Hosts Community Barbeque
I had the pleasure of going out to our Police Department’s May community barbeque at Valley View Park. It is always fun to have the opportunity to join families and neighbors for an afternoon of music, munchies, activities for the kids and of course, a friendly game of basketball with police officers. Thank you to our Police Department and everyone who came out for making this such a great afternoon!
May Business of the Month
It’s that time again! Time to recognize our business of the month - Heaven Can Wait Animal Society.
Heaven Can Wait Animal Society is a nonprofit dedicated to preventing unnecessary euthanasia and improving quality of life for animals in our community. Founded 23 years ago, the organization continued its commitment to providing accessible pet medical services, community outreach, and advocacy throughout Southern Nevada. We greatly appreciate their dedication to making North Las Vegas the “purr”fect place for our furry friends.
Touring the World-Famous EDC Festival Grounds
North Las Vegas City Council members along with other city officials were invited to tour the grounds of the world-famous EDC Festival by Insomniac Holdings that takes place right in our backyard.
The festival is an incomparable combination of an adult theme park, techno music, and some of the most unique art displays on the planet. The festivities last three days and bring lots of economic value to local businesses. The City of North Las Vegas was delighted to tour the colorful festival grounds for this innovative event that takes place so close to our city!
