Hello Residents,

Based on our weather, it seems that summer has finally arrived! I am excited to share some of the wonderful things that took place at the end of spring and highlight the many fun activities we have coming up!

I know it is early, but I wanted to give all of you a "save-the-date" for our 2023 Paws in the Park event that will be taking place on Saturday, October 7 this year. There will be more information in future newsletters and on the city's website as we get closer, so keep an eye out for it.

Celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May was Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPI) and the City of North Las Vegas was proud to host its first AANHPI Heritage Month event. Attendees were able to experience cultural performances including a Taiko drum group and lion dance, take part in activities such as origami and eat traditional food.

Thanks to NVAAPI Chamber of Commerce, Ninth Island Aunties and HaapiRoots for their partnership in making this event a success!

AANHPI Heritage Month Highlight

To further celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the City of North Las Vegas took time during a May City Council meeting to honor local AANHPI residents and business owners who have contributed to our community. I was honored to recognize Lilac Massage, a North Las Vegas business that is located in my Ward. The owner, Zhenxing Liu, opened his shop in 2016 and provides services such as deep tissue massages, hot stones, foot massages, and more. We greatly appreciate you making North Las Vegas your home.

Welcoming BELLA+CANVAS to the City of North Las Vegas

May was an exciting month for celebrating new companies coming to our city! One of those was BELLA+CANVAS who opened their new 700,000 square foot distribution center in May. You may be familiar with their super soft, high quality T-shirts or their Alo Yoga line of clothing.

As the largest and fastest growing premium brand in wholesale apparel, now taking on the retail market, we are proud the company chose our City to relocate to.

Thanks to BELLA+CANVAS for bringing jobs and opportunities to our residents. Welcome!

Olive Garden Ribbon Cutting!

It’s official: Olive Garden opened up their doors at 1250 East Craig Road as the newest addition to Restaurant Row! Congratulations to Justin, Nina and the entire Olive Garden team for bringing this latest dining option - Olive Garden's 24th restaurant opening this year - to North Las Vegas.

Our residents wanted more sit-down options and family eateries. We are so thrilled to have welcomed you to your new home, and I know our residents will definitely be stopping by to show their appreciation (and grab a bowl of breadsticks or two!).

NLV Police Department Hosts Community Barbeque

Officers and staff of our North Las Vegas Police Department were out in force at the end of May hosting a community barbeque at Valley View Park. They joined families and neighbors for an afternoon of music, munchies, activities for the kids and of course, a friendly game of basketball with police officers. Thank you to our Police Department and everyone who came out for making this such a great afternoon!

Mariachi Awards at Council

Earlier this month, we recognized all of the Mariachi Competition winners from the City of North Las Vegas’ first annual School Mariachi Competition! Each winning school’s Mariachi Director gathered at council to receive the awards for their school. What an amazing competition with so many talented, young individuals.

We look forward to seeing what you do at next year’s competition - it will certainly be hard to top this year’s! Congratulations to all the awardees and everyone who participated!

May Business of the Month

It’s that time again! Time to recognize our business of the month - Heaven Can Wait Animal Society.

Heaven Can Wait Animal Society is a nonprofit dedicated to preventing unnecessary euthanasia and improving quality of life for animals in our community. Founded 23 years ago, the organization continued its commitment to providing accessible pet medical services, community outreach, and advocacy throughout Southern Nevada. We greatly appreciate their dedication to making North Las Vegas the “purr”fect place for our furry friends and I am honored to have Heaven Can Wait Animal Society in my ward.

Protecting Your Mail

You can help protect yourself and others from mailbox theft by following the below best practices:

  • Use the letter slots inside your Post Office for your mail, or hand it to a letter carrier.
  • Pick up your mail promptly after delivery.
  • Do not leave mail in your mailbox overnight. If you are expecting checks, credit cards, or other negotiable items, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your mail.
  • If you are expecting and did not receive a check or other valuable mail, contact the issuing agency immediately.
  • If you change your address, immediately notify your Post Office and anyone with whom you do business via the mail.
  • Do not send cash in the mail.
  • Tell your Post Office when you will be out of town, so they can hold your mail until you return.
  • Report all suspected mail theft to your local police and Postal Inspector.
  • Consider starting a neighborhood watch program. By exchanging work and vacation schedules with trusted friends and neighbors, you can watch each other’s mailboxes (as well as homes).

If you see a mail thief at work, or if you believe your mail was stolen, call police immediately, then call Postal Inspectors at 877-876-2455.

Yours in Service,

Councilman Richard Cherchio, Ward 4
