2023 North Las Vegas State of the City!!

WOW! This year marks another year we all gathered together to celebrate the successes of the City of North Las Vegas and man, you all did not disappoint in making this year the best one yet.

Mayor Goynes-Brown pointed to the city’s financial health and unprecedented momentum in economic development, with two out of every three Southern Nevada companies incentivized by the state choosing to locate in North Las Vegas. The city’s attractiveness to new industries has resulted in:

  • 63,533 new jobs, with an average hourly wage of $33.31
  • $438 million dollars of capital investment
  • $36 billion dollars in economic impact
  • $5 billion healthcare campus planned for the city’s Job Creation Zone adjacent to the VA hospital
  • Redevelopment of 19 acres in the Lake Mead/Las Vegas Boulevard corridor, the gateway to downtown North Las Vegas

Mayor Goynes-Brown also featured the initiatives this Council has created focused on improving the quality of life for the residents of North Las Vegas, ensuring opportunities for success, access to good schools, solid support systems, desirable amenities and safe neighborhoods. Among the quality-of-life initiatives highlighted were:

  • Investment in new parks and revitalization of mature parks
  • Programming to increase attendance and family engagement at public schools
  • Cultivation of Restaurant Row, with 24 new dining options opening in the last three years

Additional highlights include:

  • Increased housing stock and policies designed to keep homeownership attainable and affordable
  • Opening the city’s third police station and breaking ground on its ninth fire station
  • Increasing public safety through diverse, intentional police officer recruiting and robust community policing
  • Modifying ambulance contracts to add capacity and reduce response times for residents
  • Dedicated resource center for veterans
  • Dolores Huerta Hispanic Resource Center, opening soon to provide job training, social and cultural programming and other services to the Spanish-speaking community

Thank you to everyone who made this event possible! See you next year!

This milestone caps a decade of incredible work by City Manager Ryann Juden, Libraries Director Forrest Lewis and their teams, as well as all of you who continually show support for our City of North Las Vegas Library District.

The Aliante and Alexander branches previously were open from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays and now are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. respectively.

Free Blood Pressure Screenings Now Available!

The City of North Las Vegas, together with Medic West Ambulance, recently installed blood pressure machines at two local senior community centers. North Las Vegas residents will now be able to monitor their cardiovascular health and lower one of the greatest preventable adult health risks in the United States.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is often described as a silent killer because most of the time there are no symptoms. High blood pressure is a major contributing risk factor for heart failure, heart attack, stroke and chronic kidney disease. The United States Preventive Task Force found good evidence that screening for and treatment of high blood pressure in adults substantially reduces the incidence of cardiovascular events.

Testing machines are currently available at:

  • Silver Mesa Recreation Center, located at 4025 Allen Ln.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Senior Center, located at 2420 N. Martin Luther King Blvd.

The machines will be moved to different locations every six months to reach as many residents as possible across the City of North Las Vegas. Blood pressure testing will be available at multiple North Las Vegas recreation centers during normal business hours with no fee and no appointment needed.

I AM POSSIBLE

The City of North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center commemorated the successful completion of its latest I AM POSSIBLE rehabilitation program class on Monday, April 3 at the North Las Vegas Municipal Court! Graduates have successfully completed the 30-day substance abuse rehabilitation program, which introduces them to tools to make more positive choices when they are released from the correctional center.

The I AM POSSIBLE program was established in 2021 through the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Grant Program and is the first of its kind in Nevada municipal jails. I AM POSSIBLE provides offenders who have a substance abuse disorder with tools for recovery, with the goal of reducing recidivism by 50%.

Offenders may enter the program voluntarily or through a court order. Participants receive individualized treatment plans including cognitive and behavioral therapy. The 30-day treatment plan is meant to provide the incarcerated community with introductory tools for substance abuse recovery and they are encouraged to continue rehabilitation post-release.

We are so proud of this program and even more proud of all the participants who successfully complete it. In the City of North Las Vegas we believe in rehabilitation, and this program is a tribute to that commitment.

Protecting Your Mail

You can help protect yourself and others from mailbox theft by following the below best practices:

  • Use the letter slots inside your Post Office for your mail, or hand it to a letter carrier.
  • Pick up your mail promptly after delivery.
  • Do not leave mail in your mailbox overnight. If you are expecting checks, credit cards, or other negotiable items, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your mail.
  • If you are expecting and did not receive a check or other valuable mail, contact the issuing agency immediately.
  • If you change your address, immediately notify your Post Office and anyone with whom you do business via the mail.
  • Do not send cash in the mail.
  • Tell your Post Office when you will be out of town, so they can hold your mail until you return.
  • Report all suspected mail theft to your local police and Postal Inspector.
  • Consider starting a neighborhood watch program. By exchanging work and vacation schedules with trusted friends and neighbors, you can watch each other’s mailboxes (as well as homes).

If you see a mail thief at work, or if you believe your mail was stolen, call police immediately, then call Postal Inspectors at 877-876-2455.

Councilman Richard Cherchio, Ward 4
