News From Your Mayor
2023 North Las Vegas State of the City!!
WOW! This year marks another year we all gathered together to celebrate the successes of the City of North Las Vegas and man, you all did not disappoint in making this year the best one yet.
During the presentation, I pointed to the city’s financial health and unprecedented momentum in economic development, with two out of every three Southern Nevada companies incentivized by the state choosing to locate in North Las Vegas. The city’s attractiveness to new industries has resulted in:
- 63,533 new jobs, with an average hourly wage of $33.31
- $438 million dollars of capital investment
- $36 billion dollars in economic impact
- $5 billion healthcare campus planned for the city’s Job Creation Zone adjacent to the VA hospital
- Redevelopment of 19 acres in the Lake Mead/Las Vegas Boulevard corridor, the gateway to downtown North Las Vegas
I also featured the initiatives this Council has created focused on improving the quality of life for the residents of North Las Vegas, ensuring opportunities for success, access to good schools, solid support systems, desirable amenities and safe neighborhoods. Among the quality-of-life initiatives highlighted were:
- Investment in new parks and revitalization of mature parks
- Programming to increase attendance and family engagement at public schools
- Cultivation of Restaurant Row, with 24 new dining options opening in the last three years
Additional highlights include:
- Increased housing stock and policies designed to keep homeownership attainable and affordable
- Opening the city’s third police station and breaking ground on its ninth fire station
- Increasing public safety through diverse, intentional police officer recruiting and robust community policing
- Modifying ambulance contracts to add capacity and reduce response times for residents
- Dedicated resource center for veterans
- Dolores Huerta Hispanic Resource Center, opening soon to provide job training, social and cultural programming and other services to the Spanish-speaking community
Thank you to everyone who made this event possible! See you next year!

Free Blood Pressure Screenings Now Available!
The City of North Las Vegas, together with Medic West Ambulance, recently installed blood pressure machines at two local senior community centers. North Las Vegas residents will now be able to monitor their cardiovascular health and lower one of the greatest preventable adult health risks in the United States.
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is often described as a silent killer because most of the time there are no symptoms. High blood pressure is a major contributing risk factor for heart failure, heart attack, stroke and chronic kidney disease. The United States Preventive Task Force found good evidence that screening for and treatment of high blood pressure in adults substantially reduces the incidence of cardiovascular events.
Testing machines are currently available at:
- Silver Mesa Recreation Center, located at 4025 Allen Ln.
- Martin Luther King Jr. Senior Center, located at 2420 N. Martin Luther King Blvd.
The machines will be moved to different locations every six months to reach as many residents as possible across the City of North Las Vegas.Blood pressure testing will be available at multiple North Las Vegas recreation centers during normal business hours with no fee and no appointment needed.

Children’s Week in NV!
I recently joined other Nevada leaders and executives at the East Las Vegas Community Center to kick off Children’s Week in Nevada! We celebrated children, explored affordable childcare, and learned about the importance of early childhood education.
I was honored to be invited to take part in this celebration, and look forward to all the possibilities ahead.
Women’s History Month Luncheon
On March 19th, I had the pleasure of meeting with the founder and president of Heart To Heart LLC Ashley Burney to talk about my role as Mayor of the City of North Las Vegas. I talked about my experience working in education, what it means to be a community servant, and the importance of women empowerment as it applies to others and to myself. It was great to be able to share my history and how my past has shaped me to be the woman I am today, and be able to give advice to other women who are striving and hustling out there as well.
Thank you, Heart to Heart LLC for having me and for giving me this opportunity to connect with young women who are “leading with purpose” in celebration of Women’s History Month!
Supporting Project 150
I know we are in April, but back in February Cox honored me as part of their Black History Month celebration for being a local leader in my community. Flash forward to now, and they surprised me by presenting a $1,000 check paid to the order of the Project 150 nonprofit in my honor!
Project 150 is a nonprofit organization that aims to help solve the problem of teen homelessness in Nevada. It is so fulfilling knowing that I was able to play a part in supporting this amazing organization, and in turn, am helping my community.
Thank you, Cox for this opportunity and amazing honor!
ABC Luncheon
I was honored to be invited by the Association of Builders and Contractors to their March Mayor’s Luncheon Panel. The City of North Las Vegas has shown what it means to grow a local and regional economy through new industry and construction, great customer service and investment in mature areas, and it was great to be able to share and learn with my fellow Mayors.
Topics my esteemed colleagues and I discussed included a few of our most exciting projects, interesting trends we’re seeing in construction, and the impact elected officials can have on helping to develop young talent in construction fields.
It was wonderful to meet and talk with so many business owners and contractors – thank you to this sold out crowd for engaging with us.
Small Business Connectors at Broadacres!
The North Las Vegas Small Business Connector (SBC) hosted an informational booth at Broadacres Marketplace on Saturday, April 1 to highlight and promote the City's resources to the 800 vendors located at Broadacres. Over 60 points of contact were made with requests for business assistance, funding and other small business needs!
Broadacres Marketplace is an affordable, value and family-oriented retail and entertainment complex with a vast array of vendors, plus food and live music and we look forward to working with them again in the future!

IGNITE-ing the way at UNLV!
What a great way to end Women's History Month! I was honored to share my story as a woman of color in politics with the IGNITE group at UNLV.
I spoke about the journey that led me to where I am today, as well as provided advice and inspiration to young women who may aspire to a similar path someday.
Thank you ladies, for being so open and honest with your questions! Lets light the path for women everywhere this month and always! 💗
I AM POSSIBLE
The City of North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center commemorated the successful completion of its latest I AM POSSIBLE rehabilitation program class on Monday, April 3 at the North Las Vegas Municipal Court! Graduates have successfully completed the 30-day substance abuse rehabilitation program, which introduces them to tools to make more positive choices when they are released from the correctional center.
The I AM POSSIBLE program was established in 2021 through the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Grant Program and is the first of its kind in Nevada municipal jails. I AM POSSIBLE provides offenders who have a substance abuse disorder with tools for recovery, with the goal of reducing recidivism by 50%.
Offenders may enter the program voluntarily or through a court order. Participants receive individualized treatment plans including cognitive and behavioral therapy. The 30-day treatment plan is meant to provide the incarcerated community with introductory tools for substance abuse recovery and they are encouraged to continue rehabilitation post-release.
We are so proud of this program and even more proud of all the participants who successfully complete it. In the City of North Las Vegas we believe in rehabilitation, and this program is a tribute to that commitment.

Thanks to all for a wonderful afternoon!
