Hello Residents,
As we bring February to a close and welcome March, I want to thank everyone for joining the City of North Las Vegas in celebrating Black History Month. The City of North Las Vegas is overflowing with different cultures and diversity and I am so grateful to be able to connect not only my story, but each of yours during these months of culture and celebration.
March has a lot of fun things in store including Women's History Month, and I look forward to sharing with each of you all the great things our City is up to!
Yours in service,
Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown
News From Your Mayor
City Hosts First-Ever School Mariachi Competition!
On March 4, more than 20 local middle and high school Mariachis competed in the first-ever City of North Las Vegas Mariachi Competition at The Amp at Craig Ranch Park. This first-of-its-kind competition in the state brought not just North Las Vegas school Mariachis together, but groups from across the entire valley.
Students competed for a variety of awards including Best Trumpet Section, Best Violin Section, Best Vocalist, and more, in addition to 1st-3rd and Overall Grand Champion in their respective divisions.
The Overall High School Grand Champion was Del Sol High School, and the Overall Middle School Champion was Monaco Middle School. Each of these school Mariachis collected a $1,000 prize, a huge trophy, and bragging rights for the rest of the year!
Congratulations to all of the students who participated and a huge thank you to the parents, family, friends and teachers who supported them.
Breaking Ground!
We are excited to welcome BLAK Development Co. and Kalb Industries of Nevada’s latest project to the City of North Las Vegas! In late February, they broke ground on a 52,000-square-foot warehouse that will create jobs and opportunities for area residents. Thirty-thousand square feet will be occupied by the Reece Group, Australia’s largest supplier of plumbing and bathroom supplies. The warehouse is located on Cheyenne Avenue and N. Allen Lane, and is slated to be completed by September 2023.
This project marks the first building in North Las Vegas from BLAK Development and Reece Group’s second showroom in the valley.

Cox Black History Month Recognition
It was such a privilege to be recognized by Cox Communications as a Black History Month 2023 honoree in the month of February! I was honored to be interviewed and have the opportunity to celebrate with all of the other honorees during the celebration at the Springs Preserve.
Check out the video here to learn more about my history and my passion for the City of North Las Vegas.
Welcome Spector & Co. to North Las Vegas
I was excited to welcome a new company to our city last month – Spector & Co. This Canadian supplier of promotional products has created a truly state-of-the-art showroom, warehouse and production facility, and we were invited to not only pop the cork at their ribbon cutting but also take a tour of the 90K+ square foot space that includes all kinds of embossing, printing, embroidering and other machinery. This facility is expected to create nearly 200 jobs when fully operational.
City Celebrates CARE & Veterans Treatment Court Graduates
The City is proud to share that 10 community members graduated from our CARE Court and Veterans Treatment Court programs in February! The programs are built on collaboration with prosecutors, defense attorneys, correctional center staff, case managers and court team members all working together to connect participants with resources like transitional housing, substance abuse counseling, job training, employment training and more. This is not an easy program and participants are required to actively participate and engage in the programs and services that will best ensure their future success. Less than two years old, we are seeing positive results from both programs and I look forward to sharing more successes with you in the future.
Celebrating Nevada Reading Week
For more than 30 years, Nevada Reading Week has been celebrated across the Silver State in March to promote a life-long love of reading. As a former educator, I know first-hand and appreciate how important it is to cultivate a mindset of learning. I was thrilled to be able to visit multiple schools during the week and read to students at several elementary schools, including Jesse D. Scott, Goynes, Eva G. Simmons and H.P. Fitzgerald. Thank you to all of the schools who reached out and to our teachers who work with and read to our students on a daily basis!
Excited to run into Piper Overstreet-White, VP of Government Relations for the Las Vegas Raiders while reading at H.P. Fitzgerald.

City Promotes Rebecca Gipson to Assistant City Manager
I am excited to announce that the City has promoted Rebecca Gipson to the role of Assistant City Manager! Rebecca has been with the City for over six years and has proven herself to be an invaluable resource. She is continuing to serve her community here at the City after a 20-year career with the Clark County School District. I can’t wait to see how Rebecca will continue to make her mark on our City.
Business of the Month
This month City Council and I were honored to present the Business of the Month award to Ward 3 business, Forgotten Not Gone (FNG). They are a suicide prevention organization that combines physical activity and positive mental health to better our veteran community. FNG provides and maintains a fleet of velomobiles recumbent trikes FREE of charge for our local veterans and their families. Thank you to Forgotten Not Gone for improving veterans' lives!
Celebrating Black History Month
February was a very exciting month of celebrations and recognitions! These included our own City of North Las Vegas’ celebration featuring The Divine 9. If you aren’t familiar with The Divine 9, it refers to the nine historically black Greek Letter organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council founded in 1930. We had representatives from the various fraternity and sorority organizations in addition to food trucks, a DJ, dancers and more. The afternoon was quite chilly and I appreciate everyone who came out to support and celebrate with us.
I was also thrilled to attend the Public Education Foundation’s event at the Martin L. King Senior Center honoring African American School Namesakes during Black History Month. I couldn’t be prouder to have the Theron and Naomi Goynes Academy (named in honor of my parents!) included in the list of North Las Vegas schools along with Bob Bailey MS, Kermit Booker ES, Tyrone Thompson ES, Eva Simmons ES, Wendell Williams ES and Joe Neal ES.
These are some of our community's most impactful trailblazers and I salute them all.
Proclamation Recognition Chef Jeff Henderson
The City of North Las Vegas and City Council recognized The Chef Jeff Project for its extraordinary accomplishments in helping change the lives of disadvantaged and system-affected young men and women throughout the Las Vegas community. Thank you, Chef Jeff, for impacting our community and our future!
More Amazing Events!
Take a look at the following pictures from some of the fun events I attended this month!
100 Academy School of Engineering and Technology Meet and Greet, Vegas Chamber Fireside Chat with Mayor Goynes-Brown, Chairman Paul Anderson and President Mary Beth Sewald, and The Original Outstanding Gentlemen of Las Vegas, Inc.’s Award for Outstanding and Dedicated Service to the Historic Westside Community and the City of Las Vegas!
Creating Future Leaders
In February, I was honored to be invited to be a presenter at the Leaders of the Future Empowerment Series hosted by Canyon Springs High School. This incredible program reaches hundreds of CCSD leadership students and I couldn’t be more excited to help inspire them on their journey as students and recognize their achievements as future leaders.
