As we dive into the new school year with back-to-school events and preparations for the coming week, I would like to take this time to wish you good luck on this exciting new beginning. Whether you are going to the same school or starting a whole new one, the beginning of the school year always brings fresh new opportunities. Parents as well, thank you for taking on the exciting role of early-morning risers, carpool drivers and keepers of the schedule.
As you get ready to drop off your child before the alarm bell on Monday morning, be sure you have scheduled their yearly immunizations. See flyer below for more information including locations and requirements.

The Just One Project Podcast
July 30, I joined CEO and founder of the Just One Project Brooke Neubauer on her podcast, where we spoke about what’s happening in Ward 5 and the mission and vision we have for the community.
The Just One Project works hard to provide food to individuals and families in need. Thank you to Brooke and her team for all that they do to serve and for welcoming me on their podcast. Stay tuned for the release of the episode.
Postcard Luncheon at the Historic Westside School
The afternoon of July 30, the city's Youth Development and Social Initiatives Department (YDSI) hosted a thank‑you lunch for community partners in Ward 5, giving the YDSI team an opportunity to create postcards featuring the ward’s beautiful, historic and truly special sites.
It was a wonderful event and a meaningful way to express our gratitude while celebrating the structures that have become staples of the community.
Thank you to Dr. Tammy Malich and the YDSI team for organizing such a meaningful event that honored true legends in our community.
Ward 5 & Doolittle Active Adult Center
Rededication and Ribbon-Cutting
July 31 we held a ribbon-cutting for the newly constructed entrance at the Doolittle Active Adult Center. This improvement was long overdue and absolutely necessary. The new entrance provides members with a street-facing view of the parking lot, allowing them to safely check for their transportation without having to go outside in harsh weather.
The entrance also is spacious enough to ensure easy access for those using walkers or wheelchairs.
Thank you to Facilities and Parks & Recreation staff for this beautiful enhancement -- our seniors truly appreciate it!
PVAC Final Summer Performance
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Performing and Visual Arts Camp for Kids (PVAC), and they celebrated with their annual final performance. I had the honor of presenting a proclamation to Dr. Marcia Robinson, who has led the West Las Vegas Arts Center and this program since its inception.
PVAC is a cornerstone of the Ward 5 community. It gives our youth the chance to learn, express themselves, grow in the arts and create memories that last a lifetime. This year’s performance was truly beautiful.
If you have youth in your life, please consider signing them up for this summer program, it’s outstanding!

Splash Pads Now Open
Splash pad season continues! All city of Las Vegas splash pads are now open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Sept. 30.
The water is clean and safe, just like the tap water at home. The water is recycled through the same treatment process used throughout our community, helping conserve one of our most valuable resources.

City Reopens Utility Tax/Sewer 2025 Rebate Program
Low-Income Residents Ages 60+ May Make Appointments
Now At Several City Of Las Vegas Centers To Apply
The Utility Tax Rebate Program offered for years by the city of Las Vegas to low-income seniors who reside within the city limits now has higher income limits to qualify. Those who did not qualify before may qualify now under the newly adjusted income limits. New applications may be filed with the city Aug. 1-Oct. 15, 2026, for rebates of franchise taxes and sewer fees paid in 2025. Application forms are not available online; applicants must apply at one of the centers listed below. Residents can call the center they wish to attend for an appointment.
Seniors age 60 and older who qualify may receive a rebate on the franchise tax they paid for local utilities throughout the 2025 year. These utility bills include NV Energy electric power, Century Link or Cox Communications telephone bills and Southwest Gas natural gas charges. The bills must be in the name of the person filing for the rebate. Applicants must make an income of less than 150% of the federal poverty level, which is $23,475 for an individual or $31,725 for a household of two. See the chart for other household sizes.
Applicants must bring copies of all their 2025 local NV Energy, Southwest Gas and CenturyLink/Cox Communications telephone bills, photo identification, proof of income, proof of bill payment and other supporting documentation to fill out an application. Identification and bills must match physical address.
Low-income homeowners ages 60+ who qualify also may apply for a partial rebate of the annual sewer bill on their primary residence located within the city of Las Vegas; bring copies of your bill(s) and proof of payment for the 2025 sewer charges. Visions Park Now Accepting Applications!
Are you blind or visually impaired and looking for a home that will work for you? The new Visions Park community is Nevada's first apartment complex designed specifically for people who are blind or visually impaired with accessible features and supportive services.
Backed by the Blind Center of Nevada, Visions Park is not a standard apartment complex that happens to be accessible. It is the only community in Nevada built from the ground up architecture, layout, lighting, flooring, services, and location specifically around the needs and independence of people who are blind or have low vision.

Downtown Las Vegas is preparing for a busy season filled with events, nightlife and increased foot traffic. To help keep the community safe and maintain a welcoming atmosphere, the city of Las Vegas is reminding residents and visitors about curfew regulations currently in place for minors — especially in the Fremont Street area.
