Hello friends and neighbors,
Thank you to all who joined in on what was the hottest block party in Ward 5, Love on Jackson. I had so much fun getting out into the community and seeing so many friendly smiling faces having fun. Thank you to all who also provided performances -- the Red Hat Soul Sisters, the Western High School Choir, Robert O. Gibson Leadership Academy Drumline and Las Vegas Hi-Steppers Drill Team.
With high spirits, we are continuing our activities within the ward. Be sure to check out the “Looking Ahead – Come Join Us!” section below for all the details and ways to get involved.
Wishing you a safe and wonderful weekend.
Warm regards,
Shondra Summers-Armstrong

National Reading Month In Ward 5
March is National Reading Month and on Monday, March 2, I spent the morning in the classroom reading to students at Berkeley Bunker and Doris Reed elementary schools. I am excited to connect with our young scholars and will continue to visit more schools in Ward 5 throughout the month.
Patriot Park Clean Up
We started the day Saturday, Feb. 28, by giving back to our community. This past weekend, we partnered with Get Outdoors Nevada to clean up Patriot Park and plant more than six new trees.
It was a great turnout, with families and community groups coming from all across the valley to participate. Moments like this are what truly build community. Together, we’re also taking important steps to fight the urban heat island effect and create a greener, healthier environment for everyone.
NEON Museum’s STEAM Family Fest
Also Feb. 28, The Neon Museum held its annual STEAM Family Fest that covers all things Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math related. Children had the opportunity to learn about electricity and so much more. Thank you to the team at The Neon Museum for putting together such a great learning experience for the youth in Ward 5.
5th Annual Roses: An Experience of Black History, Present and Future
Feb. 28, I had the opportunity to sit on a panel alongside School Board Trustee Tameka Henry and community leader Patrina McKinney. The discussion was moderated by Lavonne Hankins, who challenged us to talk not only about the importance of voting and civic engagement, but also about what comes after the election — how voters can hold elected officials accountable and stay actively involved in the civic process.
I hope to see more members of our community attend council meetings, learn how decisions are made, and use their voices to help shape our future.
Armed Forces and Foster Care Chamber Luncheon
Feb. 26, I was able to connect with professionals from the Armed Forces Chamber and the Foster Care Chamber during a luncheon hosted by Judge Anna Albertson. It was inspiring to learn more about the important work they are doing to support youth in foster care and the opportunities they are creating to help them succeed.
I was joined by my colleague Councilwoman Allen-Palenske and several city, county and court officials for an informative conversation.
The Good Word Social Club Groundbreaking
Feb. 25, we proudly celebrated the groundbreaking of The Good Word Social Club in the Historic Westside of Las Vegas, in partnership with Cherry Development.
This first-of-its-kind gathering space at shareWESTSIDE Downtown will offer nearly 9,000 square feet for dining, live entertainment and small business incubation, creating a vibrant hub for community connection and entrepreneurship.
The project represents another important step in building lasting opportunity and momentum in Ward 5. Learn more about this exciting development here.
In the Studio with J Haleem
Also Feb. 25, I had the chance to sit down with author and motivational speaker J Haleem on his podcast. We spoke about my upbringing, how I got started in politics and some exciting developments coming to the Historic Westside.
Stay tuned for the episode release - you won't want to miss it!
Love On Jackson Block Party
A big thank you to everyone who joined us for Love on Jackson Saturday, Feb. 21! We hosted a lively block party celebrating the history of Jackson Street — the historic center of commerce on the Westside — and the hope for its rebirth, alongside friends, neighbors and supporters from across the Las Vegas Valley.
From vibrant music to delicious food and valuable community resources, there was truly something for everyone. Special thanks to Mayor Berkley and our incredible community partners for their support in making this year’s Love on Jackson such a memorable success!
Kemet In The Desert Series

Black History Month Midday Inspirational Showcase and Luncheon
Feb. 19, I had the honor of giving the opening address at the Midday Showcase and Luncheon at the West Las Vegas Theater. The audience was treated to incredible performances, followed by a wonderful luncheon at the Doolittle Active Adult Center.
The singing and storytelling were truly inspiring. Events like this are so important for our youth and seniors, giving them the chance to learn, celebrate and connect with the history of those who came before us.
Because We Matter: Tobacco Free Living Summit
On Feb. 19, I had the opportunity to attend the Because We Matter Tobacco Free Living Summit hosted by the Southern Nevada Health District. We learned about the ways the tobacco industry has systematically targeted the Black community. From their ads to branding and more, it was an interesting and thought-provoking experience.
