Hello friends and neighbors,
Ward 5 is here to continue supporting anyone experiencing hardship due to the government shutdown. We’ll keep emergency assistance information at the top of our newsletter until the federal government reopens, so it’s easy to find for those who need it. Please use the resources you need and share them with others—together, we can support one another and make sure every need in our community is met.
Speaking of community support, we have another cleanup event scheduled for this weekend at Lorenzi Park as we continue working to make Ward 5 a cleaner, safer place for everyone. We’ll also offer free, safe prescription drop-off and paper shredding services at the event — both requested by you, our constituents!
Check out the “Looking Ahead — Come Join Us!” section for full details.
Warm regards,
Shondra Summers-Armstrong

The After Market
The After Market is a local grocery store in northeast Las Vegas providing food access in a food desert. As the only grocery store within a six-mile radius of the area, The After Market not only serves the general community, but also provides a food pantry for those in need, eliminating stigma and bringing forth inclusion.

Local Food Pantries
The Ward 5 team has compiled a list of local food pantries to support residents experiencing food insecurity due to the temporary suspension of SNAP benefit payments. We encourage you to call ahead to confirm operating hours, eligibility requirements, and the accuracy of each listing.

See the latest "Access City Council" where I chat with Journey Forward Autism's Founder/President Stephanie — and Communications Director David Riggleman — about resources and job training for young adults on the spectrum. Later, David and I shared emergency food resources for those affected by the ongoing government shutdown.
The Councilwoman spoke with KLAS Channel 8 about the new Westside Education and Training Center (WETC). The Councilwoman stated that the completion of this facility is a "promise to the community" to make an investment in the Historic Westside through education and workforce development efforts that will further bridge the unemployment gap.
Historically Black Colleges & Universities Football Classic & High School Essay Contest
Ward 5 proudly hosted an essay contest for high school juniors and seniors centered on the theme “Tailgates, Traditions and Togetherness: The Culture That Connects Us.” Oct. 25, I had the pleasure of celebrating 30 plus outstanding winners at the Historically Black Colleges & Universties (HBCU) Football Classic. We enjoyed a fantastic game-day experience; each student went home with swag bags, snacks and T-shirts — all courtesy of Ward 5!
I encourage every high school student to explore all their options, including higher education, and I hope this experience inspires these young people to dream big and reach higher.
A heartfelt "thank you" to our community sponsors and partners who made this event possible — City of Las Vegas, the Raiders, Nevada Partners, G3 Electric, SUMNU Marketing, and MYS Firm — for their generous support and commitment to our youth!

School Choice Applications Are Open For The 2026-27 School Year!
The Clark County School District (CCSD) is accepting applications for students interested in attending one of the district’s many school choice options during the 2026-27 school year.
Why it matters: The district offers families a wide range of options because we believe they should be able to choose the best educational opportunity for their child.
Students can apply to any of CCSD’s multiple school-choice options that have space available, through a family-friendly, one-stop website.
What’s next: School choice applications are open until 3 p.m. Jan. 13, 2026.
Attention Developers: Funding Applications For HOME Grants Are Available Online!
The city of Las Vegas grant application process is now open for HOME Investment Partnerships Program Grants (HOME). The request for proposal, public notice of funding and program manual with details on eligible applicants and requirements are available for review and download on the city of Las Vegas website.
Approximately $3.5 million in HOME and Account for Affordable Housing funds are available to create, preserve and improve affordable housing for low-income households. The following types of development projects are eligible for this funding:
- new construction
- acquisition/rehabilitation
- rehabilitation of multi-family units.
Developers who are in need of gap funding for the development of eligible affordable housing may apply. Low-income housing tax credits, private activity bonds or private funding would be the primary funding source.
The deadline for submitting completed HOME applications is 3 p.m. PST Jan.15, 2026.
